This Wyoming Fool is thinking about moving and Fallon Nevada looks like a possibility.
I flew into the Naval Air Station there many decades ago and the memory stuck with me. If anyone on here lives there or near by I'd like some info. Things like property taxes, fuel costs, quality of life, hunting near by, fishing. The really important stuff like ease of getting a CCW from the local sheriff department, I have one from Wyoming but it and Utah are not recognized in Nevada. Any other pros or cons about Nevada in general or the Fallon area in particular would be helpful. Thanks

Have never lived there but have spent lots of time in the area. You are just a short drive to fernley north west of fallon which is just a short drive to reno. north of fernley is GREAT as you can get to the black rock desert as thats where you can run around in the desert till your hearts content. Fossils, geodes, and lots of history. its a cool area but do not go alone as its the only place I have been and spent the 4th of july and never saw another soul.
cool fossil beds just a few miles north west of fallon and lots of desert including turquoise mines. west of town is nice and a few little towns between fallon and carson city like silver springs buts its is or was a small just crossroads type of town.

You are within a hour of carson city and virginia city and there is a ton to do.
not only do you have the casinos and airport in reno a little over a hour away but some cool stuff like hot august nights if you like cars. lots of great gun shows. lake tahoe and skiing is just a short hop away also.

I do miss northern nevada.

Nearby...

I live in the Carson Valley about an hour and a half from Fallon. You can never go wrong living in Nevada. Jon Coppenbarger has already given you some good info.

I can't speak to big game hunting but I would suspect the upland game would be great there. I hunt near there in the Dayton area. Lots of quail, grouse, dove. There's also fishing as well. You can also ATV and off road to places unknown.

The quality of life is great here. Expenses are considerable less, especially if you consider California (I escaped there 7 years ago :)). If you ski or boat, Lake Tahoe is an easy drive from there.

Nevada is a shall issue state so provided you are a resident with a clean record it's just a formality with the sheriff after you complete a CCW class.

You can legally own all the fun stuff here like machine guns, SBR, SBS, AOW, supressors, threaded pistol barrels and on and on...

Places to shoot are endless. Nevada is 85% BLM. I can be from the safe to pulling the trigger in 5 minutes.

Hope it works out for you in Nevada.

Thanks

Thanks for the input now all I have to do is find a nice place with a few acres so I can set up my own range like I have here.

Also check out NevadaShooters.com. It's a local board for the state. I know some of the regular posters are from the area you are looking at.

the nice thing about nevada you have lots of places to shoot and if you need a range most towns have one. They have one or used to just west of mound house as you start to go over the hill into carson (south side of 50). yes mound house has more going for it besides brothels but not much. very nice range north of reno out to 1k with very nice shorter ranges also. lots of ranges in the towns on 80 but not sure about fallon but they should have one also.
