They should sue the airforce for dropping the ball on filling that conviction paperwork.

That is what makes the most sense to me. Basically sue everyone we possibly can regardless of their actual culpability and hope that they decide paying us off is less costly/easier than going to court and beating us.

I'm sure you've heard the phrase, "you can indict a ham sandwich." Right, wrong, or indifferent, there are lots of lawyers out there just looking to shake out a settlement. And from the defense's perspective, that always has to be weighed against the cost of defense. A lawsuit claiming $1M in damages might settle for $700K, or you might fight it for $300K, but then you still face the prospect of $1M in damages, bad press, a finding of negligence (which might be used in later lawsuits), etc . . . .
