I may be traveling this fall up the I85 corridor from Atl to Va and Pa to visit family and do some recreational shooting. As such, I will be transporting 6 - 8 long guns (semi auto and bolt) 5 or 6 handguns and thousands of rounds of ammunition. In the event of a traffic stop/problem, what paperwork, etc. would be best to have to prove there is nothing illegal intended with all this? I have an SUV so there's no separate trunk to lock in/hide - other than putting a cover over cargo area. Thoughts? This may all be for nothing, but with all the issues lately, thought I would get some input/advice. All thoughts appreciated.

All guns unloaded and secured in cases. Ammo separate and copy of the peaceable journey law with the firearms. Drive safe, avoid NJ, NY, and DC and you should have no problems. Remember your right to remain silent. If you have CCWs or hunting licenses in your destination states obviously take those with you. Long guns are less of an issue, the pistols are where things can get sticky. The laws are pretty good in PA, I got my non-resident PA CCW permit with very little trouble. I travel through NY state on our way to the midwest and I usually bring at least a long gun. Not that it is illegal to transport through NY state (at least in the Federal Gov eyes), but NY has some strict gun laws on the books that have been challenged and beaten. Check the NRA's travel site for more details on the states you will be traveling through.

I was thinking that perhaps you might print out a set of mapquest directions from your house to your destination.

This would tend to corroborate your story that you are on a trip and don't intend to stop in non gun friendly states.

The eastern seaboard may be different, but out west we often drive across a couple states for hunting or shooting. Until Speedo66 asked the question in the original post, I never stopped to think about it. After I post this reply, I'll probably never think about it again.

In SC, you can keep a loaded handgun in a closed compartment, w/o a permit.

In NC, you cannot conceal it loaded in the vehicle w/o a permit recognized by NC. You can either: 1 - keep one loaded and in the open, or 2 - keep them unloaded, cased in the rear of the vehicle (since you have an SUV with no trunk).

Go to http: //handgunlaw.us for more info on the other states you may be travelling through.

Coming here with that much hardware and ammunition, don't be surprised if there's a marching band and a parade waiting for you at the border. We Pennsylvanians cling to our guns, you know.
