I just got started on The Long Goodbye last night. Marlowe already described a guys pistol as "some foreign automatic, def. not a Colt or a Savage." This thread is getting me fired up (though technically this one is set in the '50s)

As far as the guns used in most of the stories. .32 and .38 revolvers were used a lot by the detectives. Automatics were mentioned as well, but not usually by name.
Lines like "He had two automatics on the table" or "he pulled a snub nose on me" are typical :-D
