Are fancy night vision optics essential for hog hunting? Or are there other options?

Hunt during the day?

If you are hunting over a food plot or feeder you can use a green light to spotlight them right before firing. It tends to not spook them quite as quickly as a bright white light. If you're hunting at limited ranges, less than 100m, you can probably get away with using the cheaper/older night vision technology. With an IR illuminator that should give you enough image clarity to make safe shooting possible.

Nope, and yes there are all the options in the world.

I've dropped them with my Garand using open sights and a flashlight, I've used night vision and even just a plain old full moon. Kinda like saying do I need a Ferrari to drive to the next town or will a Kia get me there?

With all that said, since I can afford top of the line night optics I do prefer them so not necessary but nice to have.

We've killed dozens using decent rail mounted lights and different illuminated optics. I like my Eotech XPS-2 for night time hogs, but my TRS-32 works great as well.

Tongue planted firmly in cheek:

Obviously, one can only hunt hogs with a dedicated hog-specific riflescope that is, and I quote, a "precision rifle scope optimized for hog hunting by Leupold with innovative Pig Plex reticle"

And just in case you forget what you're hunting, it actually has the words "PIG PLEX" incorporated into the reticle:

Then it's just a matter of finding a pig-specific flashlight:
