I voted yes but it hasn't a thing to do with my age. For a good many years (make that decades) I've used one when wearing certain motorcycle leathers.

I use a Coronado leather cross carry bag, which is sort of like a fanny pack, when I travel. It doesn't slip off your shoulder, and gives me a place for my camera, sunglasses, cell phone, and my S&W 640. When I first bought it I wondered if it was a clear indicator that I was carrying, so I used it, without a gun in it, for several local trips. I made a point of approaching any LEO I saw and asking directions, etc. Not once did they look at me suspiciously or ask what was in the black leather case. It might help that I am 60+, somewhat overweight, and short. Here in Illinois concealed carry is always illegal, but personal safety overrides ridiculous laws.

Vito,

I don't suppose you have (or know of) any pictures of the yourself (or anybody else) using this bag? I've looked at the Coronado site and am interested. My work clothes are basically scrubs and I carry all my junk (less the gun) in an Uncle Mike's bag made for LEO duty purposes. I chose that b/c it's tough and has plenty of compartments. Now, I carry when not at work and have grown used to having the bag with me, but I was looking for something smaller and a little less tactical looking than the Maxpedition Versapack I lug around at gunshows. But before I buy, I'd like to get a feel for how big it is by seeing it on a person or maybe with everyday objects next to it so I can put the size in perspective. If you have a picture with a common gun you set right next to it, that'll give me what I need and wouldn't "blow your cover" so to speak.

LETS ALL CARRY FANNY PAKS!

Hey this thread got me thinking --- some people do think fanny pak = gun

So lets ALL start wearing fanny paks - BGs won't know who packing and whose not!

Maybe someone on THR can sell black ones with blood red Molon Labe dripping on the front? Lets make them wonder - Is he or isn't he? (or She as the case may be)

Pretty funny that the guy who wears a purse thinks that the fanny pack dudes look gay.

A fanny pack has its place, usually in places that are too hot to wear clothes that otherwise effectively conceal the firearm. Basically in the south and southwest. I see non gunfolk wearing fanny packs in these areas too and have never had anyone, including LEOs question me or even stare at the bag. The obviously couldn't search it without a search warrant or a really good reason to believe I was involved in some crime, so I don't much care.

As for the concern that some Guns and Ammos Commandos might guess I have a weapon, I really could care less. Most criminals aren't that observant, and if they are, they are looking for easy prey. If they identify me as being potentially armed, I'm less likely to be an easy victim.

Do you believe that everyone who has an untucked shirt is wearing an IWB? Every one with a jacket has on a shoulder holster?

I admit that I never fanny pack until recently, but it works well when one has to disarm at times, such as when entering a secure area, but wants to carry a full complement of equipment (spare mags, lights, comm etc) once you leave the secure area. And I do use it as my purse but I don't have to make excuses about it being a trend. I do sometimes use a gym bag when I want to care a lot of equipment without being too obvious. Heck even a short shotguns or carbine will even fit in some of those.

I would stare, point and laugh at any man wearing a purse. Even in this tofu loving college town, I don't see kids wearing satchels though the one strapped backpacks are still fairly common. Wouldn't want my weapon on my back though. If I did see someone carrying one of those old green canvas Israeli paratrooper bags, I would definitely notice and assume its an old paratrooper or special ops type.

I just looked at the Gap webpage. No man purses on there. But if you really want to join the man purse revolution, go here: http://thesatchelpages.com/. Purses aren't just for french "men" any more!
If you like your purse, stand up for yourself. Or maybe you could replace your purse with this Oakley commando vest: http://mi.oakley.com/site/media/cache/43582d56ce271.png_0_0_0.jpg. I hope that goes the way of parachute pants soon.

BTW, if anyone is looking for fanny pack, I recommend Tommys Gun Packs without reservation. It is a great bag and looks more like a piece of hiking equipment (which is still very common here in Arizona between the bikers, hikers, and, yes, hippies) than one of those packs that are obviously a gun (black and overly large).

56 and I carry in a fanny pack with no reservations. I were scrubs at (and going to and from) work and very little else works as well for me.
The BGs you run into on the street aren't some collection of master criminals filled with derring do, they're either too stuoid or lazy or drugged up to get a real job. The vast majority run the other way if there is any danger to themselves. If they figure out that I have a gun, that's to my advantage. Besides if someone made the fanny pack and somehow got away from me, I'd introduce them to Mr. BUG.

I think that man-purses are going to be getting a lot more popular as time goes by. Face it, in this age, people carry A LOT of junk with them. The days of just keys and wallet are gone. Now everyone has a cell phone, a PDA, laptop, MP3 player, etc. Man purses really do make sense. It's a shame that men are kept away from practicality from something as frivolous as fashion.

rbernie

That is a Tommy's Gun Pack.

I have one in the same color.

I assume that is where your gun is, though it could be a decoy. :D

I wrote a review of mine here:

http://thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=235038

Though I was mistaken about the front pocket size.

People cannot see my pack as my shirt flows over it. Since most folk are in Cond: White and not all that observant I do not expect anyone to notice. If they do, well...nothing I can do about that.

I'm thinking about having a happy-face patch sewed onto it and maybe a peace sign. Maybe that will short circuit the casual observer's thought process. Take their thoughts away from "gun" and push them toward "liberal" or "hippie" or "harmless".

So, I own a fanny pack. Big deal. Where else you gonna hide a .357 in a pair of lycra bicycle shorts? I'll be humiliated for wearing lycra shorts  on the bike long before anyone snickers about the fanny pack. I'm just sayin'.

I have a fanny pack for use when driving in warmer weather, but because of accessibility and the size and weight of my weapon of choice, I have switched to a shoulder rig when wearing a coat.

I think many posts here are in the context of carrying a small gun, which doesn't necessarily define CCW or even being especially prepared for a real incident. However, I too would opt for the better-than-none weapon if necessary. It just wouldn't be my standard.

As I recall I acquired my fanny packs back in the dark ages of the 80's when I had young kids. Now I only use them while hiking or such.

I am less impressed with the messenger bag/man purse style of carry for the same reason women's purse carry is less than ideal. It is far easier to lose control of your weapon if it is in a bag than in a fanny pack or holster.

That is not to say the man/woman purse has no application, merely that I would not care to use one under most circumstances.

The only people who wear fanny packs in the 21st century are people with guns.

I beg to differ. If one suffers from a bad back, as I do, having a wallet or anything like that, will worsen the problem, greatly.

So, when you have a cell phone which you can't wear due to a pistol on one side and a magazine on the other so no room to clip your phone, a wallet, a checkbook and a spare set of keys (yes, this idiot has locked himself out of his car before) to carry, what does one do?

As for looking gay or fashionable, I stopped caring years ago. My back is more important then what others may think ;) .

Let's see, I am in my late 40's. Started using fanny packs while hiking and bicycling back in the 80's, started also using them for CCW back in the 90's. Up here in the Pacific NW, lots of people use fanny packs for recreational activities such as hiking, biking and running. Up here, I don't necessarily think a connection is immediately made between fanny pack and CCW. And if a connection is made between fanny pack and gay, well, I always like to make new friends, regardless of their orientation.
