The only time I think you can get away with it and not look too stupid or too obvious is in a tourist area. Even that being said, I don't do it.

I'll never use one, because most take two hands to get the gun out. In Vegas they are everywhere but I'll stick with IWB, seeing as I don't run or bike. :scrutiny:

The problem with your poll is that there are no "NO" categories for the age groups so you can't find out any useful information.

Maxpedition Man-purse (aka Fatboy Jumbo) whenever I'm in a Florida-Reciprical state.

Hail Yes!

I use it only when traveling, as I've done for years (the tourist angle)...prior to obtaining my CHL. EZ access in the front works fine for me.

Many times I'll wear an under the pants money belt as well, with a smaller backup. I've practiced extensively getting to both and am satisfied with the time it takes.

Illinois is a no carry state. Wearing a fanny pack should arose the suspicion of LEO's if it is such a well known fact that fanny pack equals carrying a gun. I have used fanny packs, sometimes as a camera bag, sometimes to just hold more than my pockets can hold. I have never been stopped by an LEO or questioned when wearing one.

Dern Hippies

55 and I use a fanny pack.

It is the perfect disguise where I live since the area is infested with old hippies that think it is still the sixties. Heck, go up to the co-op and you'll see couples where the "wymyn" have more hair sticking out of their armpits than the men have growing on their heads.

'Round here, they see the FP and think I'm one of them.

P.

When I see someone wearing a fanny pack I don't immediately assume they're carrying a gun. First I look to see if they're wearing shorts, white socks and sandals. Or maybe shorts, dark socks and sneakers. If they aren't dressed like a middle-aged hippie I assume they're carrying a gun.

CCW is useless if your technique for concealing makes you stick out like a sore thumb.
------------------------------

What about everyone who says we should all be carrying openly anyway? I guess open carry is tantamount to suicide.

I use a fanny pack all the time, whether I am carrying or not. It is convenient, and I couldn't care less whether you think I'm gay, packing, a dork, or anything else.

FPs and other "external carry" modes are great. I support more and more people going that way. The more CCW options, the better. Let the bad guys wonder. Personally it's not my first choice, but I think it's great if lots of folks want to clandestinely "external carry" their CCW pistol. Why? Because it's great to keep the bad guys afraid of every darn citizen they meet. Is that an old hippy with a FP, or a CCW dude? THis is great for everybody, old unarmed hippies included.

A fanny pack works great on family outings with the wee ones. Do I look like a dork? I dunno. Do I look gay? Probably not. Do I scream, "CCW!"? DangifIknow.

Am I legal *and* armed? Sure am. And I've got sunscreen and snacks for the sprogs, too. :D

You know, it really is too bad that fanny packs and such are such a "fashion no-no". Chicks have purses for all of their junk, and guys have...just their pockets? I suppose you can get a messanger bag, but those are kinda large and unwiedly.

Geez, I didn't even know fanny paks are a fashion "no no" not that I care too much when I see what IS in fashion these days.

Regarding that "other" thread - I also wear wingtip shoes to work - I thought they are a classic now I learn they are "out" too?

No pocket protector but those have been 'nerdy" for at least 40 - 50 years.

I was with a friend who had his fanny pak on because he carries too much junk for his pockets (ya know, knife, multi-tool, flashlight, 3"thick wallet, etc.) a guy rode past us on a bicycle and yelled out "nice gun officer" BTW he's an accountant. I woudn't mind some of the people in LA thinking I was a cop probably cut down on getting robbed (not that I ever have been).

I guess I'll have to get a messenger bag - hmmm, then I could pack a ruger SRH?

What is the Bigger Picture?

I could be wrong but I believe the "Intent of CCW Laws" are to keep firearms out of plain site. The key is PLAIN site. So as not to freak out the general public. I don't believe the law's intent is to turn each of us into some "under cover agent" or "James Bond." I also don't believe it is to lure into a bad guys into a false sense of security because they can't tell that we are carrying.

I recently had a fellow follow me out of a gun shop. I was wearing a travel vest (not for concealment that day). The guy stopped me to say that he taught CCW classes and that he "made me" because of my imprint. He went on to say that I could get into some trouble because my imprint made it obvious that I was carrying. I lifted my vest to show this "CCW policeman" that my imprint was actually my iPod. I said that I would not shoot him with it (my PPK/S was in a pocket holster in my front pocket). This "expert" then quickly excused himself."

What's the point? For years I have used a fanny pack to carry everything but a gun. I have carried a small back pack as well. Or a camera bag. Why would a fanny pack automatically broadcast "carrying?" Saying that fanny packs are out of style is like saying that cowboy boots or hiking boots are out of style.

The only time I have been accused of carrying was the bozo "CCW policeman" who "made" my concealment of my iPod.

IMO concealment is a relative term, not an absolute.

Maybe a side benefit of concealment is to be able to surprize a bad guy. But if you are being attacked, he already has the upper hand since his weapon is already drawn and we must draw ours just to try to catch up.

Maybe concealment makes the bad guy wonder who is carrying. Maybe carrying in a less concealed manner (or more obvious manner) acts as a deterrent because the bad guy just isn't sure. "It looks like he may be carrying, maybe I should pick on someone else."

I'm really not sure which way is best except that the more comfortable, the more accessable, the easier to carry, the more likely you will carry on a consistent basis.

All modes of concealment have advantages and disadvantages.

1,000th post!!!

First, I feel compelled to say that I am sincerely sorry that you wonderful people have had to put up with 1,000 posts from me over the past year!

Now the topic, fanny packs, I would have to try one before purchasing it. If it were comfortable, I would keep using it. I care far less about looks than feel and function. Our Advanced Tactical instructor used one that closed with velcro. It was a very fast draw! It had a cord on each top corner. To open it, one grabs either cord and rips off the front, and there hangs the pistols.

So, in short, I would if it works.

IWB? Fanny Pack?

I don't post here often, but I feel the need to point something out. The only people who wear fanny packs in the 21st century are people with guns. You may as well carry openly. I suppose there are one or two exceptions, but I think that the only people who are fooled by the fanny pack holsters are the folks who buy them. Everyone else knows you're packin'

I don't mean any offense, and I hope I'm not speaking out of turn here, I'm just sayin'.

IMO, If you are wearing a fanny pack you are either gay or packing. Sorry, I know it is a stereotype but stereotypes have to come from somewhere.

Except for the gay reference, I agree with the above statements. I think the "photographer's vest" is a giveaway as well.

I put Yes; 26-35 years old but it's a vote for my wife (no I swear...), who is looking at something like that for hike's, run's and outdoor type stuff....

EDIT: Whoops, didn't realize this thread had had it's day....

The premise that someone that uses a "Fanny Pack" (more properly called a "Belly Bag", since that is where it is usually carried), is carrying a firearm in that bag, is speculative, and from the comments posted in this thread also seems to prejudiced.

I use a belly bag to carry a second set of eyeglasses, glasses cleaner, bulky medication, and hard candy to keep my mouth moistened and throat soothed. It does not matter to me what other people think about my appearance when I am in public (only during employment related activities would I care), as long as I am clean and modestly covered.

If you think I am a "Dork" for utilizing a tool in an effective manner, that is your problem; I you think my fashions are out of date, so what - I wear clothing to be functional and comfortable, not to impress people that think too highly of themselves.

I you are afraid to use an effective tool because of what someone else may think about you, you are limiting yourself needlessly. No one will give you a second thought unless you do something else to draw attention to yourself. Constantly fidgetting with your concealment rig will draw attention, regardless of it being a belt holster, shoulder holster, ankle holster, belly bag, smartcarry (fidgetting with this could really draw attention), or some other off body carry method.

If you pay attention to a belly bag, thinking it has a gun inside it, you may miss the gun being drawn from a pocket holster until it is too late. Don't assume, and don't fixate based on assumptions.

I use a fanny pack while exercising, and sometimes while hiking. It holds my water and MP3 player, too, and has a nice, non-violent logo/patch on the front. Even my LEO cousin didn't mark me as carrying when I came back from mountain biking.

Alright damnit, I'll admit it. I bought a "fanny pack". I dont use it for ccw, but its certainly handy for hunting, I use it to keep GPS, ammo, thermos, knife, etc. Its nice to drop your primary pack, and still have some storage for the basics. I bought a 850cu in one in mossy oak break up:D , inorder to get past the whole man purse thing. I've still gotten a few comments, but all in good natured fun. Dont think I'd use it to carry in a crowded city, I'd probably opt for the IWB. That www.chuckhawks.com, web sight, has some good information on fanny packs for conceled carry.

Nay, I'm too fat to wear a fanny pack and look even moderately okay with it. Maybe if I lost 35 lbs. but I strongly doubt it. Cargo shorts here in AZ with the large pockets and a good pocket holster seem to work very well for me.

There's a lot of more stylish things. A messenger bag or vintaged satchel comes to mind, and is currently in style...just look in the windows of any A&F or Gap.

And you could always hide it in plain sight with this one. :D
