Currently shooting 115 gr fmj over 4.6 g of 231.

Picked up 1000 124gr fmj projectiles and would like to know your favorite loads for this bullet and powder. Will be shooting out of a Glock 19. Thanks!

AA #5, N330/40, WSF for full loads. 700X and N320 for light loads.......See your favorite manual for charges.

Can't help with W-231 and 9MM. It works, but I got away from it in 9MM.

The starting load for a 124 gr FMJ bullet is 4.0 gr and Max load is 4.5 gr per the Speer #14 Manual. Suggest you pick up a manual and study it, since there are much better powders to use with your 124 gr FMC bullets. :)

I know there are better powders for the 124 gr. At this point, I don't want to chase another powder for 1000 projectiles.

loadedround- I got the same data. Looking for insight/experience. Guess I'll run a batch at 4.2 and see how the fly.

Any recommendation on AOL? Can I leave seating die at same setting as 115gr? Or would that create too much pressure?

I'm using Win 231 for 124gr Berry bullets. I seat these on top of 4.3gr at an OAL of 1.169" for RN and slightly shorter for FP. I've had very good luck with 231 at those levels. It's clean enough to shoot 200 at a match and not have to clean.

This is something I don't understand. Could you explain how studing a manual will let one know which powder is better than another?

Thanks for the info. I was also looking for some win 231, 124 FMJ load data. There's not anything in my Lyman book, so I appreciate the info.

ArchAngel what OAL do you use with that load?

Thanks again.

Many manuals will list the powder charges in order of performance as tested. Wouldnt call it a recommendation but you can get the drift. Some will specify there best as tested.

I'm running 4.5 grains of W231 under a 124gr Hornady XTP with OAL of 1.10.

Produces about 1050 fps out of a Springfield XD-9 4" Service model. Accuracy was good.

I second the 4.3 grains of Winchester 231 with a 124gr plated FP bullet.

I can't get my cast 124gr and 231 to shoot out of my CZ without major keyholing. I'm not the only one with the problem either. Everyone tells me to cast 147gr instead.

So far I've tried 3.5/3.7/4.0 W231, then water dropped vs towel dropped (different hardnesses). Also messed with FCD/non/crimp only. Nothing works.

As a last resort I now have 2.9/3.2gr 231 and crimp only. Will try those wednesday. If that doesn't do the trick, the mold is for sale.

I'll second ... no third ... that recommendation...

I seat to 1.14" with this exact same formula on top of a Winchester Small Pistol Primer

I see the same thing with Montana Gold 124gr CMJ's at 1.145. My CZ runs them a little faster but the 4" XD9 velocity is spot on. At least from my memory.

Under a Winchester 124fmj I got 1065fps at 1.12" with 4.3grs 231. Less pressure nand it shot very dirty for me.

I use the 4.3gr under the 124gr FP, but I seat to 1.095 because my M&P 9c doesnt like to feed and extract anything longer. So it seems to me to be a moderate load, but still less recoil than what factory ammunition produces. I have yet to chrono these loads, but everything else tells me its quite safe in my firearms.

I shoot 124 gr JHP over 4.2 - 4.6g of 231. OAL 1.125-1.150. Depends on the bullet brand. Remington JHP..4.2 @ 1.125. Montana Gold JHP 4.6g @ 1.150.

Gregger,
First off welcome to the forum...

The OAL I used with that load was 1.090" to 1.100" and that was with a Magtech bullet. Not all bullets are made the same so you might have to adjust the OAL for the bullet you're using. I have actually had to use an OAL of 1.125" on some bullets and mostly use that OAL for Cast LRN bullets. I drop the charge to 4.0gr W231 with a 124/125gr LRN bullet.

Both those loads are on the mild side and near the lower end of the charge range. They are great plinking/target loads.

I've found best accuracy with 231 in several cartridges at very low charges. I cast most of my own bullets, and for the 9mm I have been shooting most lately, a Beretta 92, it likes about 3.8gr behind a 125gr Lead bullet cast .001" over groove diameter.

With the .44 Magnum, I also find it works most accurately with very light charges.

I don't know if your pistol will function with charges this light.

I apologize in advance.

Yesterday I made a complementary statement regarding A Famous Clown who broadcast out of Windsor/Detroit. In no way was this comment meant to be insulting or offensive. Bozo the Clown was / is my Favorite.
