I just picked up a few lbs. of IMR4895 and Winchester primers and I'm currently waiting for a shipment of .223 & 5.56 brass to arrive so I thought I'd check my bullet inventory. I saw I only have 200 Hornady 55gr FMJ BT so I better order some while I'm waiting.

Before I do, I thought I'd jump on here and just see what people's favorite bullet is for just some everyday plinking at the range. I thought I'd stay in the 55gr. range. Should I just stick with the Hornady bullet for my purpose? maybe more experienced reloaders/shooters have a better suggestion. That's why I came here first.;)

Thanks.

For the price and for your purpose you can't do much better than what you have IMHO. My AR likes them. I just got 1K for $96 to my door.
I use H335 because it measures and pours much better than extruded powders into that little neck.

Hornady 55 grain soft point, flat base with cannelure. Shoots better than their FMJBT out to 300 and you can get them for 9.5 cents per bullet.

For general plinking, target shooting and P-dog shooting, I use Hornady 52 gr. BTHP and 53 gr. Match HP's. I'm using an older Rem. 788 bolt rifle, I can put 5 rounds into one hole at 100 yards, I'm happy.

I can't list one in the 55 gr category-it just wouldn't be right since I view them as a run-of-the-mill, boring, to darn small, and way to popular for no apparent reason bullet. I'm partial to the 69 ers. But this is about 55 ers, so I'll just mosey on down the line. :)

Hornady 75 grain BTHP Match bullets. $20/100 bullets and 1" groups at 150 yards.

I loaded some Hornady 55gr V-max and got a three shot "mini group" of .5". So I will be shooting those some more to see if that was an accident...or repeatable. Those were loaded with H-335. My AR is from Model1Sales with a 20"barrel.

Extreme Bullets are my favorite for range blasting. I have had good results with Nosler varmigeddons with plastic tips not the hollow points. I just received 1000pcs of RMR bullets but haven't tried them yet. Been using CFE223 powder and reloader 15 but I did use some IMR 4895 which I believe has a very close burn rate to the RE15

I'm with Mike, the 55gr sp with cannelure is a great bullet.

Generally BTHPs are the most accurate, but hornady has a winner here !

I've just added the .223 to my stable of dies and am using 55gr FMJBT found online for 'about' 9 cents each.

Even with my fat old fingers placing the bullet on the case mouth is not all that difficult on my turret.

I am changing over to the RCBS small base die to solve feeding issues with a percentage of a test batch run thru my standard Lee full length resize die. Verified with my Wilson case gauge they needed a bit more sizing near the base.

H335 powder flows like water thru the Lee Pro disk dispenser.

Hornady 55gr FMJ BT is what i shoot in all the 1-12, 1-9 and 1-7 twist barrels i own, @ 100 yds. they are very accurate, i recently bought 12,000 in two bulk packs, they weigh around 48 lbs. each, the mailman hates me. :D ...... :neener:

With my 12" twist I use mostly 55's. I use a lot of the Nosler ballistic tip boat tails but they seem to be kind of tricky because of the thick copper base. I've found that it's really easy to overdo the pressure on them. The Hornady flat based bullets are easier to tune.

Hornady 55gr sp for the money or the 75 bthp if money isn't the biggest factor. Both are quite versatile and group well.

Bullet I shoot the most - 55 Grain Hornady FMJBT

Favorite bullet and generally most accurate in fast twist AR Barrels - 69 Grain Sierra Matchking

Just my .02,

Since I don't really like fmj bullets I load whatever 55 grain hp/sp bullet I find on sale. Clearance items, midway factory Seconds whatever, all have been more than accurate enough for general use. I liked the price on the mid south bullets, if they were in stock.
