If you were at the store and needed ammo in a caliber you weren't familiar with (i.e. buying blind) and there was a wide array of brands to choose from, which brand do you choose? Which do you trust the most?

For me I would say Federal. I like their 22LR bulk packs, Hydrashocks and XM913.

Winchester.

I have had the fewest problems with them and for the most part my firearms all digest them with very fine accuracy.

I've had good results with Winchester; although, I must confess I buy them because they are cheap.
For rifles, I prefer Lake City military, as the good strong brass allows for more re-loading.

Over 30 years of shooting, I'd say that I've GENERALLY had best luck with Federal. But some guns like different stuff (my various .22s).

NEVER had much luck with Remington, of any kind, none of my guns has ever really "liked it".

Winchester would usually be my second choice.

I have had the best luck with Federal over the years when buying for a 'new-to-me gun.

Usually Federal, especially for rifle and shotgun. Handgun, I tend to lean toward Speer. For rimfire CCI is a no brainer.

However, I'll be cooking up my own rifle recipes here before long and will likely use as many Federal componets as I can as well.

Depends on what it's for. For plinking I usually buy whichever is cheapest (which is usaully winchester white box) if I'm out of reloads or need brass.
For defense I like Rem. golden saber, Winchester Ranger, Speer Gold dot, or Fed. Hydra shocks. My carry gun seems to be most accurate with hydra shoks but I've heard about expansion problems when going through denim (myth?) so I'm carrying golden sabers currently.
If I could afford $1 a round I'd probably use cor-bon DPX after testing a couple hundred rounds for reliability, penetration, and accuracy.

I always opt for Remington when I can because I have several friends and family members working there. UMC is dirty, but it always works. I like their hunting loads and defense ammo, too. I'd probably go with them if I didn't know anyone who worked there.

I voted for Hornady as I like their TAP stuff pretty well. That said, my actual carry ammo for my PT145 is the 185gr Barnes solid copper hollow points marketed by Taurus specifically for this gun. I chronographed these out of the puny 3" bbl of the PT145 and got over 1100 fps and my friends, thats SMOKIN!

Of course being in MN I chose Federals. Truth is I use Fed. for hunting, and what ever is cheapest for target practice. I usually run at least 2 boxes of the ammo I will hunt with just before the Deer season Opens. Just to confirm sights and technique. My Mechanics almost always under preform the Ammo/Rifle Combination unless I shoot 40 rounds or so. Even then I'm an average marksman.

Another MN/Federal guy. I live in the next town north of Anoka (Federal's HQ). Also, Alliant Tech Systems, another MN-based company, owns Federal, Speer, and CCI.

Other-Handload

I handload all of my ammo... except 7.62x39... and that I plan to start loading in the near future.

My SKS is partial to the Silver Bear Effect ammo though... just have not been able to find any recently.

I clicked "other" because I'm a CorBon fan. There are plenty of good brands out there, but I have never had a problem with CorBon ammo.

CCI

I'm really surprised not to see more love for CCI (Blazer/Speer). I've only got a 9mm and .22, so I can't say much first hand about the other calibers. But at least for my use they're cheap, CLEAN, and reliable.

I haven't found cheaper 9mm plinking ammo and I don't think anyone would argue with Speer Gold Dots for social work. Those aren't too awful expensive either.

For the .22 auto pistol, I use the same ammo for everything: Mini-Mag HP. We've only put about 1,000 rds through the gun, but not a single failure of any kind. And again, the stuff is so clean it takes about 3 minutes to clean the gun when I get home.

I've used Remington of all grades and find them all to be very dirty. UMC is obviously the worst, but even the mid-grade stuff is mediocre at best. And I can't make it through a 50 box of .22 without at least one FTF, even with a second strike.

I generally like the Federal stuff, and that's my fall back when I can't get what I really want. But it tends to be pricey around here and online. I find the plinkers to be really accurate out of my guns, though.

Just my $.02.

Federal is number 1!
Federal ammo shoots extremely well in every caliber that I own.

Winchester is #2 and Remington ammo is a distant #3.

I'm a Wolf fan myself. Especially their 12ga slugs. My Mossberg loves them. Always feed good and I get 3 1/2-4in groups usually.

Favorite ammo Brand?

Federal, as they seem to be the most inventive and forward thinking of the Big Ammo co's.

Also Federals the only ones that, AMMO is all they make. Not rifles, handguns or parts. Seem more focused to me. :scrutiny:
