I posted this in the "Holsters and Accessories" section and figured I'd try it here since it doesn't look like many people go there.

I plan to carry my 4" KGP-141 while hiking and hunting and want to know what you all carry and what holster you use. I have ordered a tactical leg holster for now. I think anything on my belt might get caught up in my packs kidney/hip strap, and a shoulder rig definitely would. And yes Wa State is an open carry state... but since National parks still aren't I'm not going to go hike in one until they are. Most of my hikes are multi-day 20+ miles. In case it matters I'm 6' tall and about 230lbs.

A leg holster will catch on branches and your grips can take a beating. I use the same holsters I usually do (De Santis Speed Scabbard) or a M3 type shoulder holster. You can adjust the M3 to fit forward on your off hand side. There are nylon ones that are inexpensive yet durable you can get for a variety of semi autos or revolvers.

I like the Sparks HSR setup as a crossdraw and the Sparks #200AW for strong-side carry. Both do a great job of securing a gun in the field. Today I carried my FA 1997 in a Sparks HSR while having a range session on my property.

Full flap cross draw will stay out of your way and not interfere with your pack's hip belt. Other solution if to mount the holster ON the pack's belt.

Big +1 on the M3 type. These leather WWII pieces are pretty comfortable and they get the gun out of the way of brush entanglements. El Paso Saddlery and other makers can make one for any gun if you can't fit it into a surplus M3. Plus they look pretty classic.

I usually use an old "Roy's Pancake Holster" and carry a 4-inch N-frame S&W. I wear it cross draw, towards the front, and the waist belt from my pack lays behind the holster. It's never interfered and was always handy if needed. I have a very big pack too because we used to go for weeks at a time in the wilderness areas of Colorado. Have pictures around here someplace. I, personally, wouldn't want a thigh holster if I was hiking very far.

With one lone exception, and that because it came with a gun, all my field carry is done with Mitch Rosen leather. Belt, holster, mag carrier (if used)...all from Mitch Rosens shop.

The Bianchi Cyclone #111 holster is superb for field use.

If necessary, I'd wear it on another belt over or under the pack belt.

A thigh mounted holster will disappoint you for field use, methinks.

Thanks for all the replies. I Like both the UM84R and the #111. One question I have about the 111 is, does it have an open muzzle? The pics look like a closed one but the site says it is an open muzzle? I like the look of the leather but not if it's an open muzzle. Don't want to get crud in the barrel if I fall or something.

And I appreciate the shoulder/chest rig suggestions but with pack and sternum straps and a pair of Bino's on thats a bit much.
