What is your favorite Swiss Army Knife? I have 4 classics one in my shaving/ravel bag, one on my night stand, one in the glove box of the truck and one in my hiking pack. Oh 2 red, 1 black and 1 blue.

I tend to go for the more simple sak's of the one and two layer kind. Bantam's and recruit. Maybe a tinker or spartan.

But no matter what one is in my pocket, there's a classic on my keyring mounted with a quick release hook. I love the little classic, it opens mail, plastic blister packs. wrappings of many types, cuts cotton jute twine for the garden stakes. In truth, it will do most of what a modern suburbanite needs to do in a day to day use. The little sissors really work, and the screwdriver on the end of the nailfile fit small to medium phillips screws very well.

I too love the classic.

I like the rally for a keychain knife. A blade, a bottle opener, two screwdrivers and a fingernail fixer all in a teeny package.

Perfect.

I have the Executive in my pocket right now. I really like it so far. I haven't used the orange peeler yet.

The one with the magnifying glass and the phillips screwdriver parallel to the long axis.

Yes, I like the Explorer Plus, Champion Plus, and Swisschamp the most, but of these, I'm not sure which I like the best. If I had to choose only one, I'd probably choose the Swisschamp because it has everything. These three models also all have an ink pen, mini screwdriver, and stick pin that I use much more often that I thought I would. If anyone is thinking about one of these models, I'd recommend looking for one with the older style magnifying glass and Phillips. On the older style models this layer has the same "snap" as the rest of the knife layers. On the newer models, this layer is very gritty, without any of the "snap" that Victorinox is famous for. I've found all three models LNIB online, all for around $25 each.

Swedish SAK

No, really. A Swiss knife OEM'd by a Swedish maker.

The EKA Executive Major.

Blades/mechanism by Wenger. Handles by EKA.

It's part of my EDC load-out.

I like my left handed model. I got it at a store that specialized in left handed tools. It messes with righties heads when they try to open it since the thumb notch is on the opposite side as a regular one.

Wenger Viking, which is a model no longer made. It's one of the models without the tweezers/toothpick, which is my preference. Mine has black handle scales, and I customised it by adding serrations:

Hey Bob, how did you do the serations?

I really like that idea because I wouldn't mind some serations on the first half of my bantam blade. I never liked the half serations back on the rear half of the blade, and if they were on the front half, it's way more useful on food stuff like a steak in a resuraunt plate.

I've successfully serrated blades with a selection of chainsaw files before.... Tedious to get it "right" but entirely do-able.

Carl - - I used a folding diamond sharpener, one of the ones with a round sharpening end. Since it tapers you can vary the size of the serrations, and since it is diamond it is hard enough to easily cut steel that is already hardened and tempered. Start the serration with the narrow end of the sharpener and widen it to the desired width as you go along.

I have three Vic Executives. I've had 2 Tinkers, still have one of them, and several other random models. The Executive is the knife I use most. I usually have a Tinker or a Soldier on my belt, but an Executive rides underneath my wallet, and really, I can usually get through a day without anything else.

I ssuppose the highest recomadation the executive can get, is by General Charles (Chuck) Yeager.

In his book, Press On, about his life long hunting and fishing expeditions, he speaks of knives. For many years, the executive was his pick of the only knife he carried on two to three week fishing/backpacking trips into the Sierra Nevada mountains after the Califonia golden trout. He picked Lone Pine California to retire to just because he loved the mountains and fishing in that area. He said the sak executive was his daily pocket knife, and it did just fine for backpacking in the Neveda's.

That's a heck of a recomendation any way you slice it.

My favorite SAK, and the one that's in my pocket now, is a Victorinox Pioneer that I bought around 1982 or '83. I use the knife blade frequently, as well as the bottle opener and the reamer, which makes a good scraper.
