This weekend I practiced some 2by4 drills. You tack an index card above an 8" circle. Load your gun with 2 rounds and another spare mag with 4 rounds. Draw your pistol from concealment fire 2 rounds at the index card, reload, then fire 4 rounds at the circle.

At 10 yards the best I shot was 13 seconds. Obviously, I need to practice that one a bit.

Does anyone else have good drills to practice? Here is Some other I have found

I believe that is call the FAST drill. Here is a pic of that. I print them off at home using legal paper.

I get bored pretty quick with repetitive drills but one thing I do a lot is a 2-3 shot point shooting timed drill.
I have a backyard range so it is convient to grab a pocket full of 38 Special or 22LR and the timer and shoot for a few minutes, sometimes several times a day.

I have a steel plate about the size of a small man's chest. Behind this is a larger steel plate to stop the misses.

The timer is set to randomly start from three to five seconds. During this time I randomly walk around between five and seven yards from the target, even facing away from the target.

At "Start" I point shoot 2-3 shots.

In my practice I figure the BG is as proficient as me. A miss is not tolorated, as I figure if I miss what I'm aiming at, the BG did not miss and I am shot.

This drill is interesting enough to me that when watching TV in my shop I'll shoot during the commercials.:D

I'll have to check out some of those other drills.

ATBackpackin: That's a cool print-out; sometimes I wish that THR had a "documents" section where such things could be collected for easy reference. (I'm also thinking of the Mouseguns comparison chart to be found in a sticky in the autopistols section.)

(Unless I'm wrong and such a section already exists! Which I hope ... )

My favorites, and ones I come back to fairly often, are the "Mexican Defense" drills.

1. start at/beside target. walk uprange 5 paces (or whatever, including a number you decide on as you walk, or have a buddy call out "draw" or such) Turn to face target, drawing and firing 1 rd.

2. same as 1), but have multiple targets side by side. Fire one rd at each target.

3. Same as 1), but fire 5 times at the One Target, as you move sideways. Do 'sets' both to left side and to right side

4. Same as 2) and similar to 3 but on multiple targets. When you turn around to draw/engage target, you must move sideways and engage each target once

Those four options form the basic set. You can add double taps, etc to a stage. You can on the 'shooter moving' stages have the shooter go right 2 steps, then left 3 steps over the 5 shots/1Tgt or 5 shots/5 Tgts. You can advance or withdraw on a "45 deg" angle, etc.

You'll run out of ammo for the day way before you run out of variations.

The F.A.S.T. drill is a monster. I shoot it quite often, and have scored as well as 4.6 seconds clean.
I have literally hundreds of drills that I shoot, all for working on different skills. There are a few that I always come back to, though.

- The Walkback Drill. This is another Todd Green drill, although I've seen many variations on a similar theme. It's a pure accuracy drill, shot slow fire. Put a 3x5 index card up at 3 yards, and shoot five rounds at it. If you're shooting a DA/SA pistol, alternate DA and SA. If you get all five of your hits on the card, move it back to 5 yards and repeat, then again at 7 yards, then 10, 12, and 15 yards. If you have any misses, you repeat the string at that distance. The drill ends when you have your third miss, and your score is the farthest distance at which you got 5/5 hits. There are many variations of this drill; I'm fond of putting two index cards up, and shooting one strong-hand only, one weak-hand only. I've made it all the way out to 15 yards with either hand, though not every time...

- The Hackathorn Headshot Standards. Put up three IDPA targets at 5 yards, at least 2 feet apart shoulder to shoulder. If you're stuck in an indoor range, use three 3x5 index cards stapled as far apart as possible on the backer, still at 5 yards. There are three strings of fire, with a 3.0 second par time for each. String 1 - Fire one round on each head, left to right. String 2 - Fire one round on each head, right to left. String 3 - Fire one round on each head, starting with the center target and the finishing with the other two in any order. A passing score is 7/9 or better. Try the drill from a ready position. If you go 9/9 three times in a row, try it from the holster. If you're still getting all your hits, try it from concealment. I've managed 9/9 from concealment at a 3.0sec. Par time, and 7/9 from concealment with a 2.5sec. Par time.

- The Triple Six. I think that AMU and SIG Shooting Team captain Max Michel invented this one. Put up an IPSC or IDPA target at 7 yards, draw, and shoot six rounds. Record your time. Then move the target back to 15 yards and shoot six more rounds, then back to 25 yards and shoot six more rounds. Add up your times for the three strings, then add 0.2 seconds for every C or -1 hit, 0.5 seconds for every D or -3 hit, and 1 second for every miss. 13 seconds is a pretty respectable time on this drill, I one managed a 9.something with my Limited gun.

Huh. I just noticed that Todd has each of those drills posted on his site. Great minds...

Here is another copy of the FAST target, but this time I put some contrast to it. You can change the colors as you see fit or just leave it black and white. If you use a colored one, you may want to just make one copy at home and then to an office store to make copies because printer cartridges can get expensive.

The drills that Artee and Chris put up sound like fun. The only problem for me right now is that I do not belong to a private range so the only thing I can do is pick up the gun from the bench in front of me to simulate drawing. I know it's not even close, but it is better than nothing. I plan on joining a private range very soon so I can play reindeer games too.
