The F.A.S.T. drill is a monster. I shoot it quite often, and have scored as well as 4.6 seconds clean.
I have literally hundreds of drills that I shoot, all for working on different skills. There are a few that I always come back to, though.
- The Walkback Drill. This is another Todd Green drill, although I've seen many variations on a similar theme. It's a pure accuracy drill, shot slow fire. Put a 3x5 index card up at 3 yards, and shoot five rounds at it. If you're shooting a DA/SA pistol, alternate DA and SA. If you get all five of your hits on the card, move it back to 5 yards and repeat, then again at 7 yards, then 10, 12, and 15 yards. If you have any misses, you repeat the string at that distance. The drill ends when you have your third miss, and your score is the farthest distance at which you got 5/5 hits. There are many variations of this drill; I'm fond of putting two index cards up, and shooting one strong-hand only, one weak-hand only. I've made it all the way out to 15 yards with either hand, though not every time...
- The Hackathorn Headshot Standards. Put up three IDPA targets at 5 yards, at least 2 feet apart shoulder to shoulder. If you're stuck in an indoor range, use three 3x5 index cards stapled as far apart as possible on the backer, still at 5 yards. There are three strings of fire, with a 3.0 second par time for each. String 1 - Fire one round on each head, left to right. String 2 - Fire one round on each head, right to left. String 3 - Fire one round on each head, starting with the center target and the finishing with the other two in any order. A passing score is 7/9 or better. Try the drill from a ready position. If you go 9/9 three times in a row, try it from the holster. If you're still getting all your hits, try it from concealment. I've managed 9/9 from concealment at a 3.0sec. Par time, and 7/9 from concealment with a 2.5sec. Par time.
- The Triple Six. I think that AMU and SIG Shooting Team captain Max Michel invented this one. Put up an IPSC or IDPA target at 7 yards, draw, and shoot six rounds. Record your time. Then move the target back to 15 yards and shoot six more rounds, then back to 25 yards and shoot six more rounds. Add up your times for the three strings, then add 0.2 seconds for every C or -1 hit, 0.5 seconds for every D or -3 hit, and 1 second for every miss. 13 seconds is a pretty respectable time on this drill, I one managed a 9.something with my Limited gun.
Huh. I just noticed that Todd has each of those drills posted on his site. Great minds...
