Knew that would get folks attention........

I was curious to know if anyone has a source to find out just what arms WERE in Federal Arsenals in the southern states.

To the best of my knowledge the first seized was the Chattahoochee Arsenal on the Florida/ Georgia border on the night of January 20/21 1861, followed by the Naval Yard with its arsenal in Pensacola on the morning of January 21, 1861. ( always wondered how them Baja Carolinians get all the credit when they waited MONTHS to actually do anything)

I know the Floridians had Maynards, and some say those were among the seized items, I have also read that Florida bought Maynards in 1859 and 1860 with state funds. Oddly the cavalry of Florida that first year was armed with whatever boys brung from home which was apparently mostly single barrel muzzle loading shotguns and darned few sabers or pistols of any kind.

Any ideas on where one might even look for such information?

We have better things to discuss than terminology for the Civil War.

Pretty much the same arms as in Northern armories. There were a handful of M1855 rifles and rifle-muskets, but those tended to be scarce and the initial issue had been to the Regular Army. Most arms were M1842 smoothbores, or M1842s converted to rifled muskets and fitted with rear sights. But they were issuing everything...I've heard of requisitions for musket flints as late as 1864.

On top of that, the states were buying arms all through the late 1850s and 1860. Especially the Cotton States.

You might get a better response on the North-South Skirmish Association BB.
