Just a thought... has anyone here considered or had experience with the new-ish Federal EFMJ, as an alternative to say, the Corbon Pow'Rball? From what little information I've found, they perform well regardless of handgun & target.

the efmjs are not new, and we have done some testing on them they are pretty cool, especially in guns that had trouble with loading hollow point ammunition..

the way things are going on this forum i may have to take some time and make a big ballistics testing thread... where we can demonstrate our findings, and then test things that people want to see

ps 1 of my favorite tests was trying to measure the wound channel in about 100lbs of clay, after firing a 700grain Smith and Wesson 500magnum (from a handy rifle)

lets just say there wasn't a piece of clay left larger than a thumb tack

I think their performance is not as good as hoped, compared to other good JHP ammo. However, I think it is a viable alternative to FMJ in states that outlaw JHP (like idiots). New Jersey for instance. I'd check to see if it's still legal there though, they may have caught on by now.

One advantage to them is that they don't clog up on clothing or dry wall.

EFMJ = Better than FMJ, not as good as premium JHPs.

Despite their closed-tip design, expansion after penetrating multiple layers of clothing is spotty.

I have them for carry in NJ. If your weapon won't reliably feed premium JHPs, they would be a good alternative, as would Cor-Bon PowerBall.

Hey, I found several gelatin-tests on BrassFetcher. :)

Federal 105gr EFMJ vs. Cor-Bon 100gr. +P Pow'R Ball

Federal 165gr EFMJ vs. Cor-Bon 165gr. +P Pow'R Ball

Federal 135gr EFMJ

The .45ACP test was interesting. The EFMJ had a larger average expansion diameter (.806" vs. .679"), less penetration (10.2" vs. 11.78), and appeared to have retained more mass than the Pow'R Ball. Hmmm.... choices choices.

I'd like to see how those two stack up in a thorough test against the Extreme Shock, Glaser, and MagSafe rounds.

Grasshopper, you have a long road ahead of you...welcome to THR and keep reading the postings here. I suggest you do a thorough search of each of these ammos here. I fear that you have fallen for hype over performance.

To Summarize...

...what I have read from reliable sources, over the years, the EFMJ has proven somewhat disappointing in terminal effects. Those who have autoloading pistols that will not feed hollowpoints reliably are better served by Cor-Bon's Pow'R Ball.

As to New Jersey and its ban on hollowpoints, the law is vague in that it refers to dum-dum bullets and could be construed to include any bullet designed to deform on impact, whether or not it has an open cavity.

Just to clarify the NJ stance on HP's

HP's are legal to purchase, legal to own and legal to shoot where shooting is legal, such as a range. Even legal to take directly to or from said legal place of shooting and your home.

If you should be in a self defense situation at HOME and you used HP's, even that is legal, although in theory a weasel DA could try and get an indictment that would be chucked later.

A civil suit might try and leverage the possession of these but .......

HOWEVER, if you should have said eeeeevil rounds outside of the home and NOT in transit directly to or from a legal place of shooting you are breaking the law and can be charged and potentially convicted and will certainly lose you "privilege" of owning firearms in NJ.

In reality, the law is typically used as a charge multiplier by the legal system so if a nefarious character is pulled in, the charges would include multiple charges of illegal possession of these cop/child/elderly killer rounds.

Moral of the story is ifi n NJ, be aware and police your vehicle after going shooting as a single loose JHP round in your car from a legal range trip 6 months ago could lead to a criminal conviction......:banghead:
