looking for the Average Joe review of the Fed Fusion 150 grain .30-06

i picked up 3 boxes to shoot out of a BRAND NEW Savage 111 Trophy Hunter XP. it was about all they had in 150 grain. how is the accuracy is MOA consistant? or is it typically a minute of deer? how is terminal performance? consistant pass throughs? Bang flops?

now with all this said... i know good shots result in dead deer. bad shots in wounded and missing deer. i know every rifle is subjective and likes a different type/brand/model of bullet, just looking for a general statement.

shots <200 yds

I've used some 150's in my 308. I had better than average accuracy compared to other factory loads. From what I've read it seems to be decent ammo.

Thanks for the reply JMR40. i am heading to the range tomorrow. sadly its only a 25 yard sight in, to get me into the woods this week. hoping to make it to the 100 yd range thurs but... its a 40 minute drive one way. kind of sucks.

I shot federal fusions in my .270 and they were accurate they shot MOA and from what I've seen are a good value ammo. They are accurate and will do the job if you do yours.

Can't speak on the 150's, but my 06 loves the 165's. Three shots, three dead deer. Ranges from 65-125 yards.

I don't use them, but no one mentioned the fact that they use a bonded core bullet which IMO, is more reliable than standard cup & core bullets. They will expand without blowing up on bone, and still retain some bullet weight for good penetration.
If they shoot well in your rifle, they will bring home the venison and the bacon.

What about thicker skinned game, like elk or bear? Are the Fusions pretty much designed for deer? Or are they good for bigger game too? I ask because my brother recently picked up Fusions for his .300 WM, and I got the impression he plans to use it for his upcoming bear hunt.

I wish they offered their bullets for handloaders. I'd like to try them, but I didn't buy loading equipment to pay $30 a box for ammo. The second they offer them, I'm in.

Federal Fusion is indeed good ammo, we use a lot of it at the shop and it hangs in there with some of the high priced 'premium' ammo.

If your rifle will shoot it well, you'll be ahead of the game, and 'most' rifles like the stuff.

I ended up buying a few boxes of the 150 grain Fusions. I've got a Savage 111 FCNS in .30-06 and I originally bought a different brand of 150 grain rounds for it to sight in. Let's say for argument's sake they came in a yellow and green box. After two boxes of these the target was still looking more like a pattern from my full-choke 12 gauge than a group I'd expect from a Savage. Spent a few more dollars for the Fusions and all of a sudden I could cut the bullseye right out of the paper at 100 yards. Shot a nice 8-point with one that season and it was a perfect bang-flop at about 90 yards. I highly recommend at least giving them a try, I went back and bought two more boxes of them as soon as I dropped the deer off to get processed. Hope this helps.

Thanks all! i thoroughly do appreciate all the replies. now, are there any negative remarks? seems everyone loves them. there has to be someone who doesn't?

My 30-06 hated the 150gr fusions, but that doesn't mean that your rifle will be the same, you've just got to try them out and see how they do. If your rifle does like them, it should make a great deer bullet, the reviews I've read state that they are bonded with a relatively soft jacket leading to good expansion and decent penetration.

I believe that the DeepCurl bullets offered by Speer are of the same construction as the fusion bullets, although the offered bullet weights in a given caliber are not quite the same.

I have run the Fusion 150s in a Ruger t/s 30-06 and an American .308. At right about 20 bucks a box(in my neck of the woods anyway) they are hard to beat. They group just as well as the $40 stuff, and the only buck I have taken with them was DRT. Something else in the cheap end of things that I've had good luck with is the Hornaday Am. Whitetail line. The Hawkeye 7mm08 LOVES the 139gr. Interlok.

Yeah... My savage 111 absolutely hated them 5-6 inch group at 100 yds. After struggling with them I tried normal blue box fed power shock 180's. 1.5 in group. Called it a day after that. The blue box 180s will kill just fine I am sure. Traded the remaining bullets I had (2.5 boxes) for a Bushnell elite 3200 10x40 tactical scope... Now to buy a rifle to put it on.... Its an addiction I swear.

My savage 116 shot the fusion good. 3 shot group @ 100 yards could be covered by a quarter. This was a new rifle that had less than 40 shots fired from it. The gun also shot core-lokt good. That was using 150 grn bullets. in 180 it was Winchester softpoints that it liked

Guns are just picky... its strange.

i wish they weren't so picky some time... but.

Used the 150s in my .308 this year, took a mulie buck, one shot quartering away, complete pass through with silver dollar exit. No complaints here.

Personally I'm not a fan, I tried a box of 150 gr. .308 and 30-06 in two different guns and accuracy was very so-so. Both of these guns shoot 150 gr. SST factory loads into less than an inch and the Fusion ran up to 2" groups. Still good enough for hunting I suppose but the SST's work so well on deer it's what I keep on hand.

My father in law shoots them in his .270…terminal performance has been excellent.
