I vaguely remember Wally carrying some cheaper brands.

However I stopped by to pick up a carry round for my newly acquired first EDC and all they had was a 135gr Federal Hydro Shok at $26 / 20rds.

This seems kind of expensive and kind of heavy, but thought I'd check with knowledgeable people here.

I didn't think they were even still making Hydra-shoks, I thought they went out of vogue when it was found that they were prone to clogging on clothing, and not expanding properly (or so i'd read long ago.)
As sigarms228 said, I'd go with the cheaper and better Gold-dots. I believe Remington Golden Sabres are also particularly economical for premium SD ammo.
But still, the Hydras will still be tons better SD ammo than any plan FMJ, I know i still have a box or two buried around here somewhere.

That's expensive, but when it's your only option, you go with it. There have been times in recent years when you were fortunate to find defensive ammo at all. I finally gave up, and ordered a box of 250ct Nosler bullets, 115gn hollow points. I loaded them to 1145fps for my 9mm carry ammo. Being a reloader gives me a more options than someone who has to rely on availability of factory ammo.

Hydra-Shoks aren't horrible, though there are higher performance rounds in 9mm. They are really good in older 9's in terms of feeding. However, over a buck a round...that's too much for that round.

IIRC those 135gr Federals are reduced recoil rounds. IMO they are a very good choice especially for shooting in one of the very small and light 9mm compact pistols that are all the rage.

Like already said, the price is out of line but sometimes if you need ammo they have you!
