Problem is, we do not prosecute drunk drivers as seriously as we should in this country. They should all serve hard time in a prison for a year or two. So, not sure about taking their gun rights away would be legal and probably not in most states.

Kind of s stupid statement in my opinion....and I don't consider myself soft on DUI.

But a kid who gets popped on his 21st birthday moving his car out of a tow zone, so he can park it legally over night, while he takes an uber home should not (IMO) do a year or two in prison. Especially with burglars and perpetrators of violent assault often receive less.

As far as DUI laws being soft.... that depends on what state you're in. Get a second DUI in Michigan and you license is revoked (not suspended) and you'll have to spend years documenting sobriety, AA attendance and have AA mentors vouch for you, then spend thousands of $ on legal fees so you can stand before a judge and beg him for you license back. I don't consider that soft.

How does a misdemeanor conviction warrant the denial of a constitutional right in the first place?

Please do note that a "conviction" of a "non violent crime" does NOT in any way mean the convicted was not a violent offender.

They were ALL offered a "plea" to a MUCH lesser crime.

Now how do y'all feel about the "non violent offender" ?.

I have seen personally the dropping of VERY violent attacks to a misdemeanor,or even dismissed to a violation.

Long as it suits the courts and the attorney's.

Drunk drivers are a menace to society. A high school friend inherited a construction company and a trucking company. He went to prison for third offense drunk driving. One would think that >2 years in prison would cure a person of drunk driving. Not so: Larry drove a heavy truck drunk, wrecked and killed a 12 year old girl. The jury called it second degree murder and Larry went away big time.

Phone users kill more now and we don't ban phone usage after offense yet. Almost every stoplight there is at least one sitting at green looking at phone until honked at. And many blowing red lights you can see holding phone. I would love to see offender's limited to a flip phone and no data.

One of the big problems is the people with multiple DUI`s. They continue to drive even after their license is suspended and keep accumulating DUI`s. Here in Wisconsin I keep reading about people that have been busted for their 3rd , 4th , 5th , 6th .......... DUI. Do you really want that person out in the woods deer hunting with you. I most certainly don`t !!!

If these people can clean up their act and prove it I am all for forgiveness.

I despise people that put their convenience before the safety of others.
Drunk drivers are bad enough, although they have the excuse of diminished reasoning power under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
There is no excuse for driving distracted while texting.
