This is a 00 buck load where the pellets are designed to break apart on impact. It is designed to dump energy quick using 18 wound channels and limit the risk of over-penetration. I believe that this is a marketing fad.

As far as creating more wound channels go, if you used 16 pellets #1 buck that would not only give close to 18 wound channels, but your pattern would have more pellets in it, so that would be an advantage over 9 pellets.

In the testing data the penetration of the fragments was 5.25 to 14.5 with an average of 9.5 inches, which is well below the established standard of at least 12 inches in 10% ballistics gelatin. If you used #4 buck more than half the pellets would penetrate past 12 inches and you would have a pattern with 27 or more pellets.

The article says this has "the best terminal performance available in Federal’s buckshot line-up". While I accept the argument for reduced recoil loads I believe the magnum hunting loads as well as the cheap non-plated 00 buck would provide more dependable stopping power as they will have more pellets that meet the minimum penetration requirements.

I'm sure this would do okay in general as would heavy turkey loads. I am posting here for respectful discussion as I'm not an expert.

Ordinary 2 3/4" 00buck is still the standard - and I can testify that it's a one shot fight ender if you do your part... "Over penetration" is still a concern - but so is effectiveness when it's all on the line and you need to stop an opponent that intends harm. I have no quarrel with manufacturers that are more concerned with marketing than anything else. For the individual at close quarters under severe stress effectiveness is probably their first concern...

$19 a box of 10! AIM currently has PPU 00 Buck for $8 a box of 10, $7 a box if you buy a case of 25.

Price differential too great for me to be an early adapter, especially for a defense round with no history.

Our favorite stuff anything in a shotgun shell and shoit it guys on YouTube played with it.

I am still a fan of Federal Buckshot in the Flight Control wad. That said I never use buckshot for anything. It illegal to hunt with it in Tennesse where I do most of my hunting.

Looks like a 21 st century take on using the old split shot sinkers in a buckshot loading trick . Ho hum ! The "wound channel" deal is over hyped , yes multiple wound channels are harder to treat medically, when time is of the essence, but that really is not what hunting nor defense shooting is about ! What you want is breaking bone and large holes in vital organs or CNS penetration.

Meh. I never get too jazzed up about this kind of stuff. The boring stuff is the good stuff, or the bad stuff depending on how you look at it. Lead going fast will kill, paying 2x more doesn't really further your situation, especially considering you have to practice and train with what you decide to use and the fact that you probably will never need it in a critical incident, save your money or buy 2x quantity of the boring old stuff that works....

GIMMICK...........All they did was load their shell with copper plated FISH SINKERS.......Video shows their worthlessness.

Yancey Derringer's Faithful Indian Sidekick Pahoo carried a sawn off shotgun under his blanket, loaded with "split buckshot." It would produce a dinner plate size pattern at any range.

Tom Givens has an article on buckshot describing the Ninth Pellet Problem. Seems that a regular 9 x 00 load is prone to give an 8 pellet pattern and one wild pellet, which he described as having inadvertently killed two people. The 8 x 00 "tactical" load avoids that odd shot.

I have a hard time seeing the utility of a shotgun for urban defense and combat (Even though I have one, equipment inertia in action.) It is no longer permissible to consider it as a "scattergun", its maximum modern allowable range is how far it will put all the load on an individual assailant.
Seems a carbine would be better, more tries, no spread, less recoil.

Ninth pellet problem... hmmm not something I ever saw in the patterns we had on standard, beaten up, old police issue riot guns... In fact the ones that I'm aware of pretty much could be counted on to disperse the shot pattern one inch per yard from the muzzle in an improved cylinder barrel...ie... at 7 yards a 7" pattern, at 15 yards a 15" pattern...

I'm not concerned by the scattergun effect with shotguns. In fact, that's why I like it.
As for this new Federal load, I'll pass.
I'm perfectly satisfied using 9 pellet buck, #4 buck, and my favorite, flite control #1, which is in my HD Mossberg right now...
