My wife was out shopping the other day and decided to stop by the local gun shop and pick me up some surprise ammo. Kind of like a little "thinking of you" gift. (God I love that woman :D ) What she brings back is a box of 165 gr 45 AUTO HYDRA-SHOK JHP Low Recoil. I am familiar with the standard ammunition in JHP but this low recoil thing is new to me. I would imagine that he reduced recoil is obtained by lowering the velocity and energy of the round? Should I worry about under-penetration and reduced expansion?

i think those are the ones someone here said were "downloaded" after I heard that I got the 155 and shot all twenty of my 165s.. they kicked like normal WWB ammo. So I dunno. Did not seem downloaded to me.

The Federal PPD ammo was a bad idea. The reduced recoil is mostly a result of using lighter weight bullets. You usually see .45 acp rounds use bullets from 185 - 230 grains. They had decide to follow the light and fast bullet route and it just didn't work out. I'd shoot this stuff at the range, but I wouldn't use it for self defense unless nothing else was available.

Well, at $18.99 a box (20 count) it would run rather expensive for plinking. and it appears worthless for self defense. Another all around bad idea??

Actually, where I think this has a market, is for apartment dwellers, where overpenetration is a serious concern. I think that it would be reasonably effective against a subject, while seriously minimizing the risk of overpenetration in the event of a hit or a missed shot.

I had some of this ammo a couple years ago. Recoil was a little lower than a standard 230 grain load out of my fullsize 1911. After hearing some bad stuff about it I shot it all up at the range and now use 230 grain Golden Sabers as a defensive load. IIRC, one of the issues was that it didn't expand very well. :uhoh:

Still, a bullet is a bullet. A 165 grain projectile traveling at around 1000f/s is is nothing to sneeze at, whether it expands or not.

This may all be true but if you do anything or say anything other than thank her for thinking of you, you are a fool.

I bought some a while back out of curiosity. Didn't seem to kick any less than 185gr, and like all Federal ammo, it shoots high for me. Both Gold Dots and WWB JHPs in 230gr are better bets. The Gold Dots are far more accurate, and the WWB is pretty impressive, especially at $0.36/round as opposed to $1.24/round of the Federal.
