Federal's new PD ammo

Guess many of you may have already seen this ...... in the new ''Handguns'' mag perhaps. For those who haven't .. here's a look.

Doesn't scan that well from a mag but, haven't over compressed the image too much so as to keep some text readable.

I like the looks of this stuff ...... first test I remember seeing ....

Ah. I see Federal is back to their old "oh, let's wimp out on the powder charge" tricks.



Dunno if Cor-Bon is shipping the Pow'R'Ball in 9mm yet. I know it's in development. The 45ACP is out; it's FAR faster, over 100fps with the same weight and the projectile design is better.

Betcha anything the Cor-Bon will get more velocity in a 3.5" barrel than those "personal defense" rounds will get in a 5".

I can't believe they're totally discontinuing the Hydra-shok for this. To stop production on a brand that has been a distinguishing sales point for Federal Ammo, it's a bad business move.

Check out those bullet weights. 105gr. 9mm and 165 gr. .45?

I won't be an early adopter on this one.

I have reservations about this whole new direction. Granted, I didn't use the HS like a lot of folks , I liked and still like the Federal Classic 9BP and 45D.
I'm slow to change , I miss the "flying ashtrays", of yore .

The Federal Law Enforcement ammo has different bullet weights than their Personal Defense ammo.

Both are available to the public.

9mm Personal Defense load is 105gr @ 1290 fps
9mm Law Enforcement load is 124gr @ 1173 fps

.40 Law Enforcement load is 165 @ 1056

.45 Personal Defense load is 165gr @ 1085 fps
.45 Law Enforcement load is 200gr @ 1001 fps

They're just loaded in the Blazer cases is the only difference.

If I remember correctly the results of the FBI research after the Miami mess was a minimum of 12-14" of penetration. These two load show penetration in the 8-9" range. This sound seriously inadequate. Why is everybody so excited about this stuff???

The .45 200gr +P load is pretty warm. I fired 100 rounds the other day and my hand knew it after I was done. They are for sure hotter than 230gr Hydra Shoks. They have a similar profile to the Hydra Shok's but dont feed as well in unthroated guns, or at least mine. I had 2-3 FTF's per mag in my stock Series 70 Colt. The same gun will shoot the Hydra Shok's without trouble. They fed fine in my throated Commander and shot well. Ammoman has the 200gr +P load.

I don't get it, it looks like the only real difference is that Federal is packaging their EFMJs in 20-rd plastic boxes instead of their existing EFMJs in 50-rd paper boxes so to confuse/exite magic-bullet users?

So this means that I've been using Impersonal Defense ammo all my life? -didn't know I had been soooo wrong!

You know, the shallow penetration could simply be a function of greater expansion. When you shoot a .45 EFMJ, you're not shooting a .45...you're really shooting (potentially) a .65-.75. You just can't expect to get the same penetration as other types of rounds.

The question is...is this a bad thing?

Their PD EFMJ is definitely not as hot as their "LE" offerings. Although expansion is similar total penetration is much less. Taken directly from the article in question:
.45 LE 200gr +P (Vel= 1001) .45 PD 165gr (Vel= 1085)

Bare Geletin: 14.5" 10.0"
Hvy Clothing: 17" 10.0"
Wall: 15" 10.5"
Plywood: 16.5" 12"

IMHO the PD loading was designed for civilian/urban use where overpenetration is a concern w/o giving up expansion. I'll stick to the 200gr+P for my own use...

I see no listing for any .38spl EFMJ from Federal.
They do make the Hydra-Shok in .38spl 110gr.

That was puzzling me too .. currently I have .38spl, 9mm and .45acp .......... all covered thru Hydra-Shoks ...
