Feral hogs reported in WI!

Ok I will admit it I have been kind of jealous of you hog hunters in the southern states. I was just thinking yesterday how I wish we had a feral pig problem here in WI. I was doing a little research about beaver hunting when I came across a page that talked about feral pigs here in WI!! It doesn't sound like they are that big of a problem, but I am sure the way they reproduce it will start to be a problem in the near future.

My question is this, the areas that they are reporting sightings, and kills are all very heavily forested. How would you recomend hunting these sly little buggers?? If I had to guess I would say baiting might be a good way to go.

The good news is there are no restrictions at all on the hunting of pigs. They have an open season year round.

Bean I thought the same thing, but I could only find one small mention of Feral pigs on the MN DNR website.

Baiting works. Corn, creasote posts, roadkill.

Shoot everyone you see, haul off the carcass if you decide not to eat it or you will feed the rest. IF you have a few hogs now, wait 5 years, tehn see how many you got.

sturmruger, I looked on the DNR site with no luck either, but I will be seeing the area DNR manager on Saturday, and will have to inquire on this! We have had a couple cougars enter into our area lately too.

Go to some of the bars Spiffy and Carebear hang out in here in Alaska and you'll see some feral hogs too....

Get a few 5 gallon buckets about 3/4 full of corn and cover it with water, leave the lids just covering but not sealed. You can add strawberry jello to this, fruit(apples work good) then just let it sit until it is very rank. Take this and place it near water sources where they are at.

The other option is to wait till summer and on real hot days stillhunt the edges of the water sources. They can't stand heat and have to wallow.

Try to kill them all out now if a few are present, if you don't in a few years they will be impacting deer and turkeys.

St Gunner thanks for the good advice. I will try the bait idea and see what I get. I emailed the DNR here in WI to see where the largest concentrations of hogs are.

I guy I work with who does a lot of Coyote hunting in western wisconsin just told me the other day that the farmer on who'd land he hunts, told him to shoot any hogs he sees on sight, as they are becoming a problem there.

Definitely check with local farmers. Most will let you take them for free just to get rid of them as one hog can destroy alot of crops in a matter of a day or two.

I was going to say i have met some of those feral hogs down near lambeau but some beat me to it. there are a coupld of bars in madison that cater to them....
