I am looking into opening a gun shop so I will need an ffl. I have seen some kits offered online with all necessary forms and startup etc. I am just wondering if anyone can shed some light on this for me. I have been told to contact a lawyer to set up an LLC. But I m wondering if I should go with class I or go ahead and apply for class III. I know there are fees involved as well. Any information you can give will be helpful. Thanks in advance.

There are currently 9 types of FFLs.
Fees involved reflect on the type of FFL you apply for. Also, note that your state/city/county may have additional fees you will have to pay in addition to the federal fees.

Type 01 - Dealer in Firearms ($200 for 1st 3 years. $90 renewal)
Type 02 - Pawnbroker ($200 for 1st 3 years. $90 renewal)
Type 03 - Collector of Curio & Relics ($30 every 3 years)
Type 06 - Manufacturer of Ammunition ($30 every 3 years)
Type 07 - Manufacturer of Firearms ($150 every 3 years)
Type 08 - Importer of Firearms / Ammunition ($150 every 3 years)
Type 09 - Dealer in Destructive Devices ($3000 every 3 years)
Type 10 - Manufacturer of Destructive Devices ($3000 every 3 years)
Type 11 - Importer of Destructive Devices ($3000 every 3 years)

A Type 01 FFL can also get a SOT which has 3 classes.
Type 01 FFL Class 1 SOT - Importer of NFA items ($1000 every year)
Type 01 FFL Class 2 SOT - Manufacturer of NFA items ($1000 every year)
Type 01 FFL Class 3 SOT - Dealer of NFA items ($500 every year)

If you are only going to be dealing in Title 1 firearms, you need a type 01-FFL.
If you want to deal in Title 2 firearms, you need a type 01-FFL and a Class 3 SOT.
