FFL Laws - Shipping Slides and Barrels

Does anyone know the law about shipping slides and barrels through the mail? I know magazines are shipped to non ffl's I'm just not sure about slides and barrels. Do these have to go to an FFL Dealer?

Unless you live in a more restrictive locale, normally only the bare frame is the "firearm" part of a pistol.

The US Mail is not subject to local restrictions, so mail slides and barrels all you want. The frame is the firearm, and cannot be mailed by mere mortals such as us, but everything else is fine.

It's a good idea to insure the package, and be sure to address it in such a way that no one will know it has anything to do with guns. For example, if sending a slide to a gunsmith, you address it to "John Doe", not "John Doe's Gunsmithing, Inc." This helps prevent theft.

According to an acquaintance who worked for the post office, it's a good idea to request a return receipt for your package: it considerably improves the odds it will actually be delivered.

Generally, you cannot ship receivers/frames without an FFL. (If I remember correctly, you can ship a gun to yourself, but I'd research that before I did it.)

Any other parts (slides/barrels) I've simply shipped as "machined parts", which is completely legal.
