I am trying to find a holster for the .357 4.2" Ruger SP101. I am planning on picking one of these up to use as a trail gun. I am thinking about going with a Simply Rugged Silver Dollar Pancake (mostly because it appears they are one of the only OWB leather holsters for this gun), but I don't know how well this will carry all day long.

Any recommendations for a leather out of the belt holster for this gun?
I'd like one that is made for a gun this size (no extra room for longer barrels) with a sealed off end so debris can't get in.

The simply rugged Holsters are liked by many here - that type of holster supports the weight of a revolver & carries tight to the body well for an OWB holster. I make a similar style for personal use in the field - I made one for my Ruger SP 101 3" - so it should be good to go for the 4" too!

Personally, I don't care for the type like "tom's three persons" and such that hang well below the belt-line and flop around on the thigh while in the field - I like mine "high & tight" on the hip with good retention balanced with a natural draw.

I bought my 4.2" sp101 a couple weeks ago. I bought it for a trail gun as well. Simply Rugged is indeed one of the only makers I have found that have the mold as of yet. I was looking at Ryan Grizzle's work at rgrizzleleather.com and shot him an email seeing if he would have a mold anytime soon, as it is not currently on his list. I will post back when I get a response.

You're gonna love the 4" sp101 btw, she's a sweetheart to shoot. Only thing I don't like is the grip is so small, and I'm not a fan of rubber, but that is easily fixed. Gonna upgrade mine to some hogue hardwood grips, coco bolo with dragon scales. Mmmm...can't wait. :)

How durable should I expect that front (fiber optic) sight to be? If the thing is rock-solid, I may also go with a Don Hume Jit Slide for it. After several hundred dollars in holsters for my Sig P239, It's a Jit Slide that I carry it in the most while in the field...

The sight seems pretty durable, but it's really one of those time will tell kind of things. There's no play in it or anything though and worst case it is replaceable if anything did happen. The sight does poke up off the frame a bit though and I could definitely see it getting caught on that type of holster. I would prefer a pancake style myself where all of the barrel is inside leather.

I got an email back from Ryan Grizzle this morning. He doesn't know when he will be able to get the mold but said he will when it becomes available. However, he was confident he could make a holster for it by using his 3" SP101 mold and a bit of ingenuity. Judging by the work I've seen from him I have little doubt he can and will likely be placing my order soon.

For a Field Carry holster I would go with a Lobo #5. The #5 looks a lot like the old Bianchi #5, which has been a popular belt holster forever. I have several that I am still using that I bought back in the mid to late 70's

Have a look on his web site. His prices are not bad at all.
