It applies to revolvers, but not to autos in the least.
Bad idea to continually take the side-plate off & the crane screw out of a S&W for instance.
+1 I've had a Smith 637 for four years, fired it every other week. I have never taken off the side plate, though I clean it each time. Ditto my 686-6. I field strip my Browning Hi Power to clean it each time
