Lately, the idea of getting a 416 upper and building my own AR has been tempting. I've always fought getting an AR for a few reasons.
1. At work, I have an M4 with all the trimmings to play with. (sometimes to the point of aggravation)
2. The cartridge is small for hunting. (I don't want to kill anything I won't eat. I can't remember the last time I had groundhog::barf:.)
3. It's hard to justify the ownership of one. (other than the fun/SHTF gun.)
Please, can anyone tell me why I should start buliding one?
And please don't say "cause it's, like, the coolest gun ever."
Don't laugh. It happened before.

You shouldn't build one. Why waste money on something you don't even want? No one should have to convince you of anything. But as for the cartridge, 223/556 is the tip of the iceberg. Dig a little deeper. 6.5, 6.8, 450, 458, 50, etc.

.223 kills the deer DRT - especially if they are those dog-sized deer that run around the southeast

416?

As in .416 caliber?

To each his own, but I think I'd rather have a different gun if I wanted a bigger bullet. Something not in an oddball caliber.

The mousegun platform is the most accurate "battle rifle" platform available.
Upgrade products are so abundant, your head will spin.

Magazines are cheap and abundant.

If you handload, powder consumption is half what you burn in the .308.

I don't think the .223 is really a sniper round.
But, if I got shot in the head with one, I might change my mind.

HK???

Doesn't he know HK sucks and they hate you?

The piston designs surely are a benefit if you are running a suppressor or full auto. I can tell you from my own experience with the suppressor, you will get a bunch of gas back in your face no matter what overpriced gee-whiz charging handle you install.

I'm thinking about replacing my supressed SBR upper with a Leitner-Weiss piston upper.
It would be nice to fire more than a couple shots before the gas starts coming up in my face.

h&k " you suck and we hate you, we have it and you can't":)

if you want a model like the 416 ie piston driven , lwrc, pof and other companies offer this system.

i personally would rather have someone else build my ar, it is cool i guess to say that you built it yourself but i rather, buy the gun mags and ammo and go train, i guess i am not patient enough to build one myself.

it sounds to me that you really don't even want one, so don't get one. of you have to have a reason to tell others or "excuses" to why you oen a particuallr gun than there is no reason that you should have it. get something youdo want instead.

If you don't feel the need for one, what else can we who own them say? We own them because we see the need.

To each their own.

whoa

I guess my wording was a bit vague. By 416, I meant any piston driven upper. I heard colt is going to have one soon, and I think it's an awesome idea. I'm not planning on the gun being a charactor reference. I appreciate the passion; but, I just wanted to know why, those who have them, have them. Call it a curious inquistion. If I get one or not, it is solely up to me. thanks though.:)

Seems like a lot of money to put into a home-built gun when other piston driven systems in various calibers are out there already.

I just wanted to know why, those who have them, have them.

Fun. Relatively cheap to shoot. Nice sights. More accurate than I am. Almost infinite # of configurations if you're into modification/calibers/add-ons/"tactical" gear. Or building your own.

SHTF & Zombie fantasies. If S actually HTF you won't mind having one. Addition of a bayonet is cool.

EBR. Fun to fondle and do periodic weapons drills at home.

My first EBR was a Daweoo, a piston driven AR-similar rifle. Nice rifle, very accurate. Lack of spare parts (which has improved, huzzah!), desire to own an AR & to get the GF into long guns w/an M4gery lead me to the Bushmaster distributor's table at a gun show.

Endless discussion on THR and other boards about lube, bullet weight, reliability of the AR platform, reliability of various brands, comparison to other rifles, great input from current & retired servicemen, wondering if you should have got an Arsenal AK - hours of fun!

And yes, the near certainty of Democratic WH + Congress was an impetus.

it sounds as if what your really wanting is an AR10.
My thoughts exactly.

POF makes a piston driven .308 ... its pricey, but I hear its real nice.

Why build an AR

SCIDX - I own a Garand, M1A, and 1903. I hated the M16A1 which I carried in the USMC for eight years. Last year I finally broke down and bought the parts to build a lower at a gun show. I bought the upper assembled. I had a great time building the lower. I may accumulate the parts for an upper and assemble them some time. I have not regretted it.

There is something graceful about a plain A2 without all of the toys. I am not one to worry about a SHTF situation and I am only into paper. The AR can also be had in many calibers up to those that can bring down deer sized animals on the same lower. There is even a .500 out there.

My right eye is going so I cannot use it for matches but I still enjoy the rifle for informal target shooting. I cannot explain the allure of the rifle, just that as a collector of military hardware I succumbed after I said I would never own one myself.

Be Safe. USMC Retired.
