This evening, I was finally placing my guns in the new gun cabinet I got for Christmas. Times like this are great for taking stock of your collection, and seeing what niche's you have filled, and what you still need to fill. Here is what I came up with for myself:

CCW Weapon
Okay, got this covered. I have an SP-101 in .357, a Firestorm Mini .45, and a Firestorm .380 for my wife. I can check this box.

Handy Dandy Carbine
Once again, I'm doing okay in this catagory. I have a Saiga in 7.62 X 39 (16" barrel) and a Marlin 1894C in .357 that I got for Christmas. These are great for plinking, home defense or dear with the right loads.

Shotgun
Probably the most all around versatile weapon you can have. My shotgun in an old Ted Williams 20ga Autoloader. Maybe not the most tactical gun, but it can throw shot and slugs just fine for my purposes.

Main Battle Rifle
Don't ask me to define this, others have done a much better job than me on other threads. I don't have one of these yet, but my wife has already agreed that for my birthday in May, I get to order a CMP Garand. Waiting 'till May is gonna be tough.

Long-Range Rifle
What I am thinking of here is some kind of rifle, usually bolt-action, firing some kind of full-size hunting caliber(.30-06, 7mm Mag, .270, something like that) with a scope, capable of making a 300 yard shot against a 4(or two) legged creature. I don't have one of these.

Full Size Side Arm/Night Stand Pistol
I don't have one of these either. What I am picturing here is either an auto or a revolver with at least a 4" barrel. You know, a full-size 1911, or a GP-100. Right now, our night stand gun is our Firestorm .380, because it is the gun my wife is most comfortable with. But, it is backed up with the Ted Williams, which is kept loaded in the closet.

I am sure I may have left some catagories out, but I was wondering is, which catagory that I lack is the bigger omision, the Long-Range Rifle, or a Full Size Pistol. I must say that, living in an apartment, I am leaning towards a new pistol right now over a rifle...

Thanks for everyone's advise!

What? No .22? You must have a .22 rifle and a .22 handgun. This is mandatory.

As for the rest... how detailed do you want to get? You might need:

-Mouse gun or backup gun.
-Bear/hiking handgun (many threads on this)
-Varmit rifle
-Big game rifle (in case hoardes of polar bears attack?)
-Assault rifle (in case of urban warfare or the need to do lots of plinking with relatively cheap ammo)
-A single-action revolver for cowboy action shooting.
-Another levergun in .44mag (for coyboy action shooting?)
-A 12ga shotgun, for waterfowl hunting or larger birds.
-A nice SXS shotgun for upland game hunting.
-A mid-bore rifle for those times when the hunting rifle is too much, and the carbine is too small. Like for larger varmits...
-WWII rifles of all types, for nostalgia's sake.
-WWI rifles for nostalgia's sake
-A full-race handgun for IDPA. Or is that IPSC?

Now oyu've got us started....

Oops...

Sorry sir, I already have a Ruger Mk II with the 6 and 7/8 " barrel, as well as Marlin Mod 60 .22 rifle. I just kind of assumed that EVERYONE already has a .22 rifle and handgun.

Sorry I got you started on all those different catagories...can't let my wife see that, she thinks I'm almost done buying guns...

If something happened, robbery, fire, tornado, etc., and I had to replace every gun I own the order I would chase first would be;

small defensive pistol (keltec 9mm)

Shotgun (remington 1100 12 ga)

.22 rifle (ruger 10/22)

long range rifle (remington 7400, 30.06 autoloader)

mouse gun (keltec .380)

full size defensive pistol (Berettta 92)

combat rifle (sks or ak, 762x39 with replaceable mags)

Yes, I am going to the next gun show, I need to trade up from keltec .32 to the keltec .380, or just add one, otherwise, I am happy with my selection, some have doubles, just in case.

I think everyone should have at least the following:

Handguns:
1. Very small concealable, KT P3AT, Seacamp, R9, NAA auto, etc...
2. Small concealable, PM9, .38 snubbie, .380 etc...
3. Compact concealable, USPc, P228/9, P239, 3-4" 1911, etc...
4. Full size, USP, 1911, CZ, etc...
5. Full size in .22lr, Buckmark, Ruger, etc...

Rifles:
1. Long range bolt gun, Heavy barrel Rem 700, Savage 110, etc...
2. Main Battle Rifle, FN FAL, AR-10, HK 91, etc...
3. Carbine in .223, AR w/16" barrel, Steyr AUG, FN FNC,
4. .22lr, bolt, semi, whatever, 10-22, Marlin, etc...

Shotguns:
1. Short barrel pump gun, 870, Mossberg, etc...
2. Semi Auto, Beretta 391, Browning, etc...
3. Over & Under, depends what you want to spend, Beretta, Verona, Huglu

Long Range Rifle... none dare call it a sniper rifle...

My client Jerry Rice makes some of the best.

I own one, am untrained, and can do reasonably well with it. 100 yard groups for ME look like this:

cahrlestestimonialtarget2small.jpg

It is capable of 1/4 to 1/2 moa groups in the right hands.

Forget 300-400 yards, 1000 is the range for which this rifle is made.

He has an even more elaborate system with a true flash hider called the 'Nighthawk'.

Enjoy the Nor-Cal Precision site and give Jerry Rice a call if for no other reason than to talk. He is a heck of a guy.

I feel sorry for your wife. (hint the four leg animals are DEER your wife (I hope) is your DEAR) :) :)

You are done, sorry. You have all that you need. No need for a MBR, the Saiga fills that role. What you WANT is another. I suggest you look into used police trade-ins for S&Ws 686 in 357 Magnum. A semi-auto in 9MM and 45 ACP would be nice. Police trade-ins again. A good double barrel 12 bore would be nice. The only other thing to get is a 22 wheelgun, a Ruger Bearcat would be good. The only thing I see that you SHOULD BUY is Mag Safe frangible rounds. Apartments don't have much in their walls.

D'Oh!

The wife was kind of nagging me as I posted my reply, so maybe it was a Freudian slip.

Josey, a Ruger Bearcat IS somewhere on my list, it is just far down on the list of wants, and not what I see as a need right now...
