Mine isn't. Trying to fill as many roles as possible, in as few weapons as possible, I've found myself one weapon shy of feeling satisfied.
LCR357, s&w637PC, G21gen4 (w/trijicon hi-vis), PAPM70 (w/eotech512), LMT-CQB15 (w/ Trijicon RCO), Winchester model 90 .22s,l,Lr, and a Benelli Montefeltro 12ga.

I understand that my wheelguns and rifles may seem redundant, but one revolver is my wife's, and the rifles are used for predator and hog separately.
I'm still looking to fill the role of an 800yd bolt gun in a readily available chambering.
What does your functional collection look like? Any suggestions for my "capstone" rifle?

Before I get beaten to it, I'll concede the fact that a Dreiling and a pistol could do the trick.
But what I'm talking about here is home/self defense, and hunting. But without sentimentality or indulgence playing into it.

Winchester 9422 squirrel/varmint gun
Remington Model 700 30.06 deer/bear rifle
Stevens 311 12ga rabbit/varmint/bird gun
Richland Arms 20ga O/U trap gun
Kimber 1911 CCW/bedside gun

I think the "functional" is covered

Yes

Glock 19 and Taurus 85
Winchester M70 in 6.5 Swede and Remington 760 in 30-06
Remington 121 The Fieldmaster in 22lr
Winchester 1300 defender 12 gauge
Norinco AK-47

I have dozens of other guns. I consider myself a halfway serious collector. But I consider everything else investments. If for some reason I needed to I could get rid of everythign else I own. But the 7 guns I mention above will be with me no matter what.

Metaphor or simile or something...

Yah, got my driver and a few fairway woods (longer ranging devices) a few irons for shorter distances, a few putters for getting close. I've seen people actually play nine holes using just a 7 iron... but why?

One shotgun would suffice if I had to make due, but adding one centerfire and one rimfire rifle and a handgun (or two, maybe twelve) would be even better. :D

Don't forget a backup in case your primary goes agly (Murphy at work)

But all those older (fire)sticks (and sets of golf clubs) I have... what to do with them? ;)

Oh believe me I know I'll never be completely satisfied with my collecting!

I guess what I'm asking is, if you're a guy who does have the dozens of firearms, how far could you whittle those down before you felt short handed? And what would the survivors of that choice be?
And if you already feel short handed, what else are you looking for?

I won't say how many there are, but I feel the major bases to cover for me are:

1. Rimfire rifle for plinking and hunting small game
2. Centerfire rifle for hunting large game
3. Shotty for HD and hunting pretty much anything
4. Handgun for CC and HD

If you wanted to narrow it down further, you could do away with the rimfire and centerfire rifles I guess. A shotgun could be used for hunting and HD.
Where's the fun in that though? :)

But I could actually narrow it down to 4 if I absolutely had to. I could get rid of the 760, the 1300, and the 85. But I promise I am literally starving for a meal at that point.

The last gun I would get rid of is my 121. That would be to buy my last meal.

Yep, it all my "slots" got filled when I got a good deal on a 22/45 earlier this year. Now it's all about "want."

Think mine is.

We have a Ruger .308 bolt action for longer range and hunting- at 24" of BBL, it'll fill all the roles on that show.

The wife has a closely matching Ruger 7-08 for a similar role, but in a shorter package.

We have matching mossberg 12ga pumps. From clays to food- both work just fine.

I have an m4- she has a VEPR in .308 and an M1 if the VEPR is too heavy.... this rounds out the "battleish rifle" category for us.

I have a 44 mag revolver to get me to a rifle ( now in Ruger Blackhawk flavor , disposing of that god-awful taurus 44ss4), she has a Kimber Royal II in 45acp for the same.

We just got a savage .410 for small game, and I just picked up a remington 1858 new army to scratch that BP itch.

Now, it'll be awhile before new barrels fall into place- its time to set foot on that homestead, and get the ammo company up and running.

For completeness I want a Benelli 20 ga. Legacy and a high quality combination gun. But as it is, I am ready for anything from shrew to elephant...

Hhmm - let's see -
2 - .22LR rifles, 1 ea. SA & bolt;
1 - .22 Mag bolt;
1 - .22LR/Mag revolver;
2 - 12 ga. shotties, a SxS & a pump;
1 ea. .25 ACP, .32 ACP, .380 ACP, .357 Mag, one "oddball" in .32-20;
1 - .243 bolt;
and an AK in 7.62x39.

The only guns I might be interested now are a .308, a 30-06 (possibly an M1 Garand) or an even larger caliber rifle like a .375, etc. Maybe.
:D

There have been threads about a functional collection/accumulation of firearms. It varies for everyone or rather it tyically varies if you live in the country, live in the city, have a hunting focus to your firearm selection, target shooting focus, or you're preparing for the "big one".

That usually entails about 8 > 12 guns and a lot depends on what you hunt (if you hunt).

So, your accumlation seems okay. I would lean toward another 22 rifle and a 22 handgun of your choice and perhaps another centerfire rifle.

Ok I tried to buy guns based on need also. Here's how I progressed. There were others here and there along the way but I replaced them with my current crop of firearms for various reasons.

Raven P-25 for SD (what can I say - I was young and broke and in college)
20 ga. Mossberg 185K-A bolt action shotgun for home protection
Stevens 15-B single shot .22 for small varmint control
Marlin 60 for multiple small varmint control
Norinco SKS for centerfire SD SHTF cheap to plink whatever rifle
Sig P220 (.45 ACP) for SD
Remington 870 12 ga. for better home protection
Taurus PT-145 for higher capacity SD
Marlin 60SS because my old one was showing it's age and I converted my other 60 for night varmint use
Savage 110 30.06 hunting rifle
Savage MkIIBTV for target shooting (ok I didn't "need" this one but I wanted it)
S&W 629 .44 mag for bear protection
Marlin 925 for no real good reason
NEF Pardner Protector 12 ga. pump so I could keep a shotgun loaded with slugs and another loaded with buckshot
Marlin 795 for lightweight, small game hunting rifle
Savage 12 LRPV in .223 centerfire varmint rifle
CZ 453 because it will do everything a .22 needs to do and look good doing it
another NEF Pardner Protector with a long barrel for long shots at varmints etc.
Springfield Armory XDm .40 for higher capacity SD and better bullet penetration through steel
Yugo SKS to backup my other SKS
Marlin XT-22 for high capacity small game hunting rifle that works with shorts
Ruger LCP for the wife to carry

As you can see I keep finding excuses to expand my "needs" list. That's how a person ends up buying all sorts of firearms. I haven't even mentioned the ones I've bought and sold and I'm just chipping compared to a lot of gun junkies. I know people who have owned 150 guns at a time. I feel like I've kept my collection down to mainly my needs because I only have 20 or so firearms. I'd probably have more but ammo costs way more than the guns do. Then there was the safe to put them in which is almost full already. I guess I can take the ammo out and put guns in both sides if it comes to that. Oh and there's also the scopes, the sights, the lasers, the accessories, etc. etc.. :)

You're hunting at 800 yards?!

Self defense guns should be acquired first, IMO. I have basically four different guns that I carry, depending on attire and the situation. The fourth I really got for my wife but find myself carrying it often. From smallest to largest, Ruger LCP, Ruger LC9, HKP200SK in .40/.357 sig, and a Glock 19. I pretty much never carry the LCP but its there if I ever start jogging again.
