Hello all! After 6 years of drooling over them and 6 months of saving, I finally managed to pull together the funds long enough to build my AR-15!
I'll admit, it's a home built frankenAR. I really have a love for the M16A2 look, and it seems like everyone has a tricked out M4 type AR these days, so it was a no brainer when I was picking out the parts. I went with the fixed A2 carry handle because, well just because. "I like it" is a good enough excuse for me! The lower is a Double Star (just a shell; name doesn't matter there), the lower parts kit is a no name one I bought off of Gunbroker and did a tad of work to the trigger. It breaks pretty crisply around 5 lbs or so.
The upper is a Del-ton 20" A2 HBAR. Now before I hear it from you guys, I did the research and I flat out don't have the money for a DD or something like that. Even if I did, I couldn't justify dropping a grand on a 5.56 upper. If your going to bash it, get lost. For the money though, I couldn't be happier with it! I made sure the gas key was properly staked upon arrival, which it was. The one thing that really impressed me with the upper was the tolerances between the parts. It was a really good fit between all of the parts!
Alright so all the talk and no photos yet; here it is! I ran the gun pretty wet today, as evidenced by the oil seeping out a little bit.
I took it to the range today and started out at the 50 yard range. With my dad spotting me, I got it zeroed then just shot off a couple [10 round] magazines as fast as the range would let me (2 second break between shots). Here's the first target:
Once I got a feel for it, I took it to the 100 yard range where I figured out that the sights were off to the left a little bit. I was shooting from a bench, but with no rests. I suffer from shaking hands and not the best breath control, so my rule of thumb is, if it doesn't have an optic, all shots in the black is a good grouping. I'm also not patient enough to line up the sights and stare at the target for 5 minutes before taking the shot, so deal with it. Anyway, for a first time, it isn't too bad!
And finally I took 5 sitting, 5 standing at 100 yards. You can tell which 5 were the ones I took while sitting...
The biggest things I like about this gun are:
Let me know what you guys think!

The biggest things I like about this gun are:
- The ghost ring/long range rear sight. Seriously, it's the best sight I have ever used on a gun and it lets me get on target very quickly.
- The reliability of this gun. I lubed it up really well and it burned through 150 rounds without a single hiccup.
- It balances very well despite the 20" HBAR. It might have been the way I was holding it or something but I really liked it.
Let me know what you guys think!
