Hiya Guy's :) ..

After all this time, after my ex picked up and left a few years ago & I was forced to sell my gun collection to get back on my feet again & all the nice Mosins here locally have dried up and / or disappeared all together, a Mosin carbine actually followed me home today :) .

Granted it's not the 91/59, type 53 or 38 like I once had, it is however a 946r Russian M44 from the Izzy arsenal. It's all numbers matching with the exception of the door on the box magazine. I've been after a mosin, almost any mosin for a couple years now since I started to rebuild and put together a new collection.

Unfortunately the mosin scene here locally has practically dried up and blown away. About the only mosins that have popped up on the local gun grapevine have been 91/30's that bubba has cut up and trashed for $250 - $300 or an M44 (usually Hungarian) with a shot out barrel that was counterbored for $350 - #400 .

I just happen to be perusing the local gun Grapevine early this morning while I was enjoying my coffee when this M44 popped up for sale, I jumped on it and touched bases with the guy and he said he'd get back to me after work this evening. Well, can you find Lee got back to me and we got to discussing this and that and everything else and in the process I found out that Bubba had gotten ahold of this but the only thing that was altered was the forend. It had been whacked off right at the taper but he only wanted $200 for it, and it came with 65 rounds of Surplus Ammo & an unmolested 91/30 stock. Needless to say even with the stock being chopped like it was it was still the best deal that I had seen in a long long time so I pulled the trigger on it and let it follow me home :) ...

Not a bad deal at all, and it's nice to get back into the game after a time away. Many of us have similar stories after break-ups, even I was out of the gun buying game for years after mine.

Let us know how it shoots once you get it out on the range.

Stay safe!

two of my favorite 44,s, I loads them down to 30-30 speeds and they are then fun to shoot.

Good to hear that you're back on track with your new-to-you Mosin! Full range report when you get a chance.

She’s a looker, even in that short skirt, and a good deal less price wise than most these days.

I still miss my King Cobra; not only did I have to get rid of it, my ex pocketed the money. Life does move on though and congratulations on finding a fine old rifle.

Thanks Guys :) . It really sucked having to sell off my old collection tl get back on my feet, but I had to do what I had to do and sometimes that's just how it is. What sucks is I let the 9 or 10 mosin's go that I had including a type 53, M38 & a 91/59 . What I wasn't expecting was for the mosins to dry up and disappear as quickly as they have around here, so it's really nice to finally have one back in my new collection again, especially with the way the prices for them have gone through the roof around here .

On a side note, another one that hurt to let go was my Swiss k-31 and I haven't seen another one for sell here locally since. I wound up replacing that with an 8mm M995 German straight pull carbine . Finding another stock to drop this barreled action in shouldn't be too hard, and I'm fairly sure that a friend still has a 91/30 kicking around that was setting in a fugly plastic ati stock that I might be able to pick up from him to drop in the stock that came with this carbine :) ...

We have a couple things to do yet this morning but I plan on giving this a good cleaning and going over so I'll see what kind of shape the bore is in. It hasn't been counter bored and it looks like it's in good shape but I'll see what it looks like after it's clean and I get some sunlight down the barrel.

My Mosin is one of my more favorite rifles to play with when it comes to working on hand loads. cool thing is mine slugged out at 311 (tula 91/30) so I can be economical and use the same cast or jacketed bullets for my Enfield and my Mosin. Cast round nose 180 gr with a good load of Trailboss makes for a fun load. MUCH easier on your shoulder than the 175-180 gr milsurp/Wolf ammo out there.

OK Guys, I finally got some time to give this thing a good cleaning and get a good look at the bore. I pulled the bolt and stuffed a rag in it and poured a liberal amount of Hopped #9 down the barrel as most mosins need it, then gave it a couple minutes to soak and hit it with a bore brush a few times & flushed the barrel w/ some WD/40. I ran the bore brush thru it again and flushed it then patched it . The 1st patch was a little dirty and wet obviously but the 2nd patch came out clean even after running it through the barrel twice, then I got a good look at it in the daylight.

The bore looks like it's in really nice shape compared to a lot of other mosins that I've seen. The sunlight lights up the barrel bright and shiny and I don't see any dark spots anywhere and the rifling looks clean and sharp all the way down the barrel. The crown on the barrel looks smooth and clean and I don't see any premature wear marks anywhere. With this being a 1946 carbine I'd almost say this thing seen little to no use before it was put in storage from the looks of the bore. I plan on putting Surplus, wolf, Monarch and Tula rounds thru it & I have a sneaky suspicion at might wind up being a pretty good shooter. No I need to find an unmolested stock to drop the barreled action in and get rid of this chopped up piece of crap it's in now.

Nice! Makes that $200.00 all the easier to take when you find a diamond in the rough like that...now let’s hope she slings lead into nice clusters for you on the range.

Stay safe!

You could always go with one of the ATI poly stocks, they are cheap enough and don't look too bad.

I was at the local dealer at lunch picking up my latest find. He has an M44 missing the bayonet that he got from a man who sold him the few guns he owned because he was starting to get dementia. He wanted $250. I thought about it for a few seconds and almost picked it up. I have a Hungarian M44 already. This one was Russian. The bore looked pretty dirty. I might email him and ask about it again.

My Dad has several nice Mosins, including a Valmet, but I'm hesitant to pull the trigger on one due to our deteriorating relations with Russia and the possible loss of most of the ammo supply. Do ANY of the domestic companies even make 7.62R? I know the Serbs and Czechs make it, but those aren't the most reliable suppliers either......ugh.

So glad to hear a story of. returning to gun collecting.
I have had a similar story, mine was by natural disaster back in the late 70's [ a divorce!! ]
I bought a collection from a similar disaster as mine just a while back & there is a 1932 Russian 7.62 x 54 Mosin Nagant
in it. I have heard it is a rare type but I don't know much about them except you can't shoot our half inch steel with
them. They blow right thru it like butter!!! But they kick like a mule.
The worst part of this rifle story is that it did have the original stock & all #'s matched. The previous owner put a synthetic stock
on it & threw the old one away!!
There seem to be lots of Mosin Nagant rifles around here.
Wondering if they are all the same caliber. All the ammo I have seen looks kind of like made in China, real quick.

Hope you locked the door and refused to let it come inside. If you don't feed it, it will eventually leave and find someone else to take it in.
