Finally getting back in the BP game

Recent events have let me purchase a few toys, and one I just ordered is a 1858 5 1/2 inch barrel from Cabelas, with starter kit. I don't even remember what caps/powder to get! (Number 10 and pyrodex P, right?)
Looks like a lot of fun, though, and I missed my old smokepoles from 15 years ago.

caps your best bet. Take it to a local gun shop and see if they can fit the caps. Thats what i did when i first got into it. My first gun used #10. then the second one i purchased used #11. Well now i have both 10,11 so its easy to figure out what gun takes what. Welcome to the BP club. As for the powder pyrodex p is ok. i like the real thing though Goex fff

The 5½ inc barrel Remington 58 is the most accurate black powder I own . I think it is because it is lighter than the 8 inches sibbling and somehow the short barrel POA and POI are dead on. I use .454 ball and #11 cap because my Dragoon take the large ball and #11 cap. I just pinch the cap to fit snggly into the nipples and I tilt the gun upward so the spend cap fell out of the nipple . Now you need to start save up for second one

Actually, I need to find someone with caps! Midway is out, and nobody local carries squat!

Dixie Gun Works sells Percussion caps as well as Graff & Sons
