After buying parts and assembling and then having a gunsmith check it all over I got it back today with a note of "The pistol grip and buttstock could have been screwed down a little tighter, other than that it tests out fine." Woo hoo!

Now I just have to find time to go shoot the thing.

And yes, my picture taking skills stink.

How can you even think of posting such a scary picture where children may see it?

Bravo, comrade !

Sorry I took so long to respond. I posted this yesterday and then had to go join in Nerdfest 2003 - the 12 hour marathon showing of all 3 Lord Of The Rings movies at a theater around here. Yes, I'm a nerd-boy (tm). :D

nice work, looks evil in the best way
if you don't mind my asking, how much did it run you?

Thanks, and I try not to think about that. :uhoh: It would have been cheaper to just buy an Olympic Arms AR (or a few others), I think, but here's what I ended up with -

$90 - Century stripped receiver I bought on a whim that started this mess.
$55 - DPMS lower parts kit
$60 - DPMS buttstock kit
$89 - Rock River Arms bolt & bolt carrier assembly
$15 - Rock River Arms charging handle.
$300 - 20" HBAR Bushmaster upper.
$65 - 3 30 rd mags and 1 20 rd mag
---------
$674

Oh, and $57 to the gunsmith who checked it out from one end to the other and test-fired it. It was worth it to me.

Yeah, there are complete AR's I could have bought for that (or less). I could have bought a complete Bushmaster for slightly more. On the plus side this was a minor project that I spread out over a long period of time (most of this year) which is how I justified it. I know there are a lot of people on this board who will drop $700 without even thinking twice about it. While I can afford to do so, I have a difficult time justifying it to myself without stopping and saying "That money could be better spent on x*"

Well, I'm going to enjoy my day off. I think I'm going to go out in the back yard and play with my dog.

Bryan

*X = principal off the mortgage, savings account, put towards wood floors for my house ...

My old man, an immigrant from China once told me when we tearing apart a perfectly good running car, "you're not American unless you f---- around with something."

Thumbs up for doing it yourself!

Cheaper, possibly.

Better - not possible.

Every single extra dollar you spent on DPMS parts and the Bushy upper was well spent.

How would Gomez put it...
"Good Show, old man."

ps.. take the USGI mags out of the price of the rifle. No vendor will include those. They count as Accesories or Care & Feeding. :D

Very nice. The satisfaction of having put it together yourself has got to count for something too. Very nice project.

Anyway, I got my first AR Monday myself. Mine is a Bushmaster HBAR that retails for $995 that I bought used for $775. It is in great shape (the only real wear is finish wear at the deflector). I was going to put a few hundred rounds through it earlier today (well, yesterday I guess since it is past midnight) but when I was going to go it was doing a combination of sleet, rain and snow and I didn't want my brand new (for me) toy to get wet (later, but not this early- for now I'll baby it).

Have you shot yours yet? If so, how'd it go? I might get to try mine tomorrow, but I'm not sure how I'll find the time, probably get to try it out on Sunday.

Unfortunately no. I haven't had time to get out and try it anywhere. I was thinking this Saturday or Sunday but those days aren't looking so great either now. *sigh* For now it sits locked away. When I have the time ...

And yeah, I was off yesterday but I was exhausted. I didn't feel like going anywhere and decided that handling firearms when I was that wiped out was a Bad Idea (tm).

Congrats on the new AR, I just picked up my first AR today myself..

I did not build mine, since I am new to AR rifles I figured it was better to buy it built and go from there. Got an AR-15 manual set out for tonights reading..

Great feeling to own one of these since I moved from Cali a while back to NV where we can own such toys..

Congrats Bryan,

Hopefully it can come out a play at the next TN Mafia Shoot. I've always wanted to build my own. I still will one day, but it will have a 50 bmg upper:D

...dave

Oh, believe me if I can ever MAKE it to another TN Mafia shoot  then it will be coming with me. Right now I'm wondering if I'll make it to the Smyrna gun show tomorrow that's not even 5 miles from my house. *sigh*
