Well for the first time ever I got to shoot my loaded Springfield 1911. What a blast. Its is an absolute joy to shoot. I am glad I talked myself in to it. I guess put about 60 rounds through it and not a single problem. Seems pretty acurate as well. I look forward to going to the indoor range that I normally go to so I really can see how acurate it it. Now speaking of 1911's. As it turns out my father-in-law has a very old colt in the safe that belonged to his father when we wasin the Army. Are the dates on the side of a colt an indicator of its age?

I also got to shoot a .357 for the first time today. I am not sure of the model but it was a very short S&W. Talk about some kick. It made my 1911 seem like a .22. I am going to have to get one of those I think.

What kind of old Colt? A 1911?
The dates on older guns are patent dates and have nothing to do with when the gun was actually made.
There is reliable information on year of production by serial number of Colt and contract 1911s. Post that and somebody will look it up.

I did a little research on my own....google is my friend...and it appears that it manufacturer between May of 1918 and Octobor 24, 1918. Thats pretty darn old in my book.
