Needed to do it to use the local range. I should have joined earlier, but kept forgetting. I'll still write congresscritters, but now I feel like I'm part of our pay to play government!

Anyway, I was watching Shooting USA and the host always offers to pay $10 out of the $35 cost. So it only cost $25 and I get to use the best range complex around here (once I pay them too and sit through an orientation, but $100 per year ain't bad, and I live close enough to go everyday). Not bad at all.

Anybody else putting it off? What are your reasons? Would paying $25 make you more apt to do it vs. $35?

Welcome to the NRA. I'm a life member, but before that I was like you. I put it off year after year. One of the things that convinced me to bite the bullet and join was something a Canadian man told me. I was in Canada on a business trip and we got to talking about all the gun control hitting Canada. This guy wasn't an avid shooter, but liked to do a little hunting and wanted to keep a handgun or two around the house for protection. He told me, 'we just don't have enough of an organized group here in Canada to stop these Socialists from taking our guns away. If we had an NRA like you Americans do, this would never have happened to us'. It got my attention and I joined soon thereafter.

i paid $25 for mine as well, ended up donate the other $10 anyway. congrats on the membership. it will pay for its self. you get discounts on crossbreeds products as well as many other places. one of my local ranges gives 10% off for NRA members. its the one i was using before anyway. if i could get a year at a range for $100 i woulda done it a long ago!

If it wasn't the requirement of the local range, would you still join?

My local range doesn't require it. Thank goodness.

My range "requires" an NRA membership as well. Good thing they didn't check as I like the range and wouldn't be a member there otherwise.

In about 2-3 weeks you should receive your renewal notice in the mail. Not joking keep reading.

I joined up once because I had a little paper to join for free with a gun I purchased when I turned 21. It was good for a year and I let it expire as I learned more about guns and got more disgusted with legislation that is already on the books that they seem less than interested to do anything about.

I turned 24 this monday and on tuesday I got an automated call from them begging me to renew. I gotta hand it to them, they don't give up on ya not even after 3 years.

Yeah, I'd been meaning to, but this was the impetus to get it done today. I'd been meaning to join this range earlier too... But it is always one thing after another, you know?

Also, with us getting into the NFA stuff now, it would seem kind of stupid not to. We dropped $500 on a gun trust, $25 to the NRA is pennies in the bucket compared to the NFA stuff!

So, needing to join that range, meaning to join NRA anyway, seeing an ad on "Impossible Shots", and having a little time before an appointment, it all added up to the perfect moment I guess.

I looked at the lifetime thing, I probably would have done it if things weren't so unstable in our country right now. Perhaps next year.

No bashing of NRA intended. I rather spend my money on something else. It's your money, do what you want.

I should have done this earlier, like I said, but as a Clinton-ban survivor, I've been accustomed to stocking up on mags and ammo and parts. When Giffords got shot and all that ridiculousness was re-hashed, I went and got mags for everything I have.

I'm pretty well stocked now, so from this point, anytime I see anti legislation or anti propaganda, I'll just drop the NRA a few beans, along with my usual letters to congresscreeps.

I'd like to see 2A be the third rail of politics --as should all Bill of Rights amendments. Touch it and your career is over.

That is WHY I joined, the reason I joined today is because of the range, the reason I didn't join yesteryear was because I screwed up. Don't be me, join today. You don't have to vote republicreep to garner the benefits of having a pro-2A lobby either. We have Democrats here that vote pro-2A too.

blue_ridge has a great reason above too, just hearing that would have been enough to get me to do it I suppose.

I truly believe that the NRA believes in us. I'm glad you joined, if you move from the range continue to belong. We need every member, it's a numbers game.

Joining the NRA is one of the things all gun owners and enthusiasts should do.

That being said. The NRA is the 900 pound gorilla of the gun rights lobby and as such has an agenda. If you join, you are going to be inundated with mailers; you are now on a "list". The NRA, while wealthy, always needs more funds. Any business needs to seek revenue. They will continue to solicit every dollar they can get.

I have been a Life Member for several trips around the Sun and have seen a marked decrease in all forms of "spam" from the NRA.

The reality is that the NRA is the largest lobby for 2nd Amendment rights we have. It is on us (or our onus) to support them as much as we can.

My Life Membership was paid over time. Now that I'm more advanced in age, they're soliciting their " if you die, remember us in your will" membership. No telesales, just mailers. I say whatever. They get $$ from me on a frequent basis; I'll just toss this really glossy advertisement.

In all honesty, how difficult is it to round file a mailer or decline additional donations?

I am putting it off a lot. I have political and job reasons to avoid joining. I'm at a LIBERAL college in MARYLAND and at least have of the students here come from seriously ANTIGUN states and we've had a ban of VIOLENCE on campus. An NRA membership is a huge liability to have hanging around.

P.S.: I also tried to use the NRA range, but it turns out that they do not rent firearms.

Yeah, me too. So instead of spending $5-$10 every time I go to the range and being limited to Friday through Sunday and having to use a very popular and busy military range, not to mention the gas, I plopped $25 on the NRA and $100 and now I'll get to use the nicest range around here and it is real close to boot. It is also open after dark and all day every day. Covered firing lines, a 600y range, and many competitive shoots. Yeah, it was worth every penny.

No reason you can't save money, join the NRA, and get a better range. Besides, it is only $25. If you are fretting over $25, seriously, you need to find a new hobby quick. $25 will get one box of bullets or loaded ammo or one lb. of powder. Or a few trips to a range. My reason wasn't really the $25, it was the procrastination.

I wouldn't worry about that. If you don't exercise your rights, what good are they? The school can't do anything about you joining anyway. I went to the UW and to protest CCW bans there, they wore empty holsters everywhere to make a statement.

Just so you know, almost every university is "liberal", whatever that word means. Don't get hung up on the liberal-conservative thing. That is a politician's game and you aren't invited anyway. That kind of speak is what the propagandist media (CNN, MSNBC, and FOX primarily) uses to try and tell you what to think. Think for yourself.

If the school even tries retribution, just give ACLU a call.

PS, good luck with that "violence" ban. I banned crows in my backyard, but they keep showing up...

No harder than calling the 800 number on the back of the card putting a stop to all the mailings. Just as the volunteer military, there will be enough of us to carry on the fight.

jcwit, you have it wrong, you're carrying your own ideals. That's your burden to worry about.

A better business practice for a range is to provide a $25 discount to NRA members for the range membership instead of excluding all others. Leave it to the individuals to decide.

you're carrying your own ideals. That's your burden to worry about.

So you have no reason so support your own ideals, and freedoms.

As the old saying goes, put your money where your mouth is.
Hey folks, support the big guy who does more for our sport and firearms freedoms than any other org. They are the bigest dog on the porch and they do have the bigest fangs.

Funny how no one complains about paying for a license to drive a car on the highway but will complain about joining a pro gun lobby to be able to shoot at a range that is most likely insured by NRA member sponsored insurance.:banghead:

First off, Congrats on joining the NRA is one of the last groups that is keeping the "little man" in mind anymore and they need every bit of help possible.

I recently signed my girlfriend up and explained to her how important it is to support organizations like the NRA. Why every person who owns a gun is not a member is beyond me. I cant think of a better way to spend 35 dollars a year to help defend mine and tens of millions of other gun owner's freedoms...

If you won't join the NRA at least donate to NRA-ILA or similar group. Some of you people make me sick. Do you not care about freedom or are you really that ignorant about what is happening in the real world? Heller was 5-4......

Wacki,
Oh please, get off your high horse because you're an NRA member. You're starting to sound like all those NRA mailers, same old whining, scaring tactics marketing. If you're happy with your membership, good for you. No need to whine/bash at others who aren't.

I have no bias towards or against NRA, I just chose not to belong.

That about sums it up. +1.
