Yesterday I went out and bought my first, and second, handguns.

I bought an older model HK USP 45 full size and a S&W 642 with the Crimson Trace grips. When I get the chance I'll post some pics.

I almost immediately went to the range and found out that they both shoot better than I do. I put 150 rounds through the USP and 100 rounds through the Smith.

If any of you have any advice about ammunition, or up keep, for the little .38 special or the .45 I'd appreciate hearing it.

Thank you very much, I've been trolling this and many other forums for the past year and what I've read here and heard in gun stores and seen/shot on the range has been a major factor in my decisions.

Now I just have to tell the fiancee. (The Smith is intended for her once she gets her carry license, or atleast one like it is ;))

Welcome to THR and handgun ownership! Are you a shooter who just bought your first handgun, or are you totally new to shooting?

My first gun was a used USP 40, I think the date code is from 96, and it is excellent. I even carry it from time to time, even though it is pretty big.

How do you like the 642?

I have been shooting long-guns since I was in Pre-K with an old Remmington semiauto .22 that's still around today, almost 20 years later. And I am a somewhat avid hunter. I enjoy taking the occaisional deer but most of my hunting recently has been to reduce the feral hog population on my 100 acres of land west of San Antonio, TX.

Otherwise I've handled and shot several pistols over the course of the last year but all have been either rentals or borrowed from my soon to be father-in-law. They include a Taurus .40 that his wife carries, her brand new 642 that he got her for Christmas last year, his Smith .40 chief's special, and my favorite: his 686 with Leupold handgun scope. I also did a lot of shooting 'research' with rental glocks at a local range in Houston to find my ideal caliber, it turned out I love .45 and shoot my best with it.

As for the 642 I love it, I put 50 rounds through it and it looked like I had pulled out a shotgun but when I handed it over to a friend who shoots alot more than I do it drove tacks for him. The CT grips also seemed to be almost perfectly sighted in out of the box.

In general I need a lot of practice with the 38 but she'll do nicely when put to the task.
