Since I'll going to be in Philadelphia for another 9-12 months (depending on whether I go to Japan for a semester, or something similar comes up), I've decided to join the South Philly Archery and Gun Club; a VIP membership costs $300.

It's convenient to me by subway (parking's a bear in that neighborhood), and with the VIP membership a) I'll get free gun rental, which is nice -- try lots of different ones and b) I can bring my own ammo (a normal membership costs half as much, but lacks both the own-ammo option and doesn't include rental).

I'm a bit disappointed that no one from there got in touch with us (the bunch of law students who went through their training in March -- had a good time) to let us know when the VIP membership was on special as they'd promised, but these things happen. I called today and expressed my disappointment gently, was given a non-committal "How many people are involved? Maybe we can work something out ..." but I may well be the only one actually going for the year's membership, so I bet there's no good incentive on their part. Wish I'd noticed it last month, though -- they drop the price briefly twice a year, and I'm not waiting another 5 months. For $50 spread over a year, I can't be too upset -- no malice involved -- but oh well.

So I guess this answers the question of how I'd spend my "extra" $200 + some stretching money ;) I appreciate the various suggestions that people made; more range time seems like a good one to me. Hopefully I'll make it out frequently over the course of the summer, and if I have a downtown clinical course (representing people in court? Say it ain't so!), this would be a good stop afterward.

Of course, it may well force my hand to spend some more money on some reloading supplies, to save money on ammo ... something like that, at least.

If anyone has opinions on the club or shoots there regularly, drop a line -- if your advice is not to join it for some reason, by the time I read your advice, it'll be too late, so don't give me too much grief ;)
