I'd had reservations about joining the NRA, mainly because while I agree with some of their philosophies and with the fact they are a huge lobby for gun rights, there are some things I disagree on them with. I was considering joining in the near future, until I get a letter from them.

Amongst a stack of bills and junk mail is a letter from the NRA with "FINAL NOTICE" stamped in red letters on the envelope. I'm trying to think why they're sending me a final notice - did I somehow get signed up for membership through a purchase where I accidentally checked or didn't uncheck a box? Are they after some sort of dues now because I haven't made good on the promise I accidentally made?

When I open up the letter, it says the reason the envelope was stamped "final notice" is because if I don't join and send them money now, my gun rights might be lost forever, and by then it will be too late to join. I'm sorry, but I'm not going to pander to fearmongering. This might come out as a rant, but it's partly to let people know that the NRA is willing to make you think you're receiving a priority bill just to ask for donations.

Gee, a fundraising mailing which tries to grab your attention by pretending to be something urgent? That's certainly... um... not unique.

But go ahead, don't join NRA over that. After all, Chuck Schumer may already be a winner!

So you could add your voice to 4 million others in support of gun rights,
or...,
you can use the letter as an excuse not to because you are somehow offended.

I get kinda tired of the NRA's constant chicken little the sky is falling attitude and endless requests for more financial support. But I still send them something when I can, and I'm proud to be a Life Member and one of the 4 million.

There are plenty of reasons not to join the NRA, if you're looking for one. Had that letter not arrived you could still have used whatever reason you've been using all along.

I don't agree with everything they do or say either, but I can't fight the media, government, and many other special interests by myself. They have my support. And my dues.

The Brady Campaign thanks you.

Yep, and IF we lose, you'll most likely be one of the those clamoring why did it happen?

First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Insert "gun owner" wherever strikes your fancy

My, my. You got a solitation trying to get your attention and you are offended. Just a heads up on the fact that if it weren't for the NRA you would never have received anything like that because if the NRA didn't exist you wouldn't have any gun rights left to worry about. They would have been legislated away long ago.

However this is still a somewhat free country so you are welcome to ride on the backs of 3 million NRA members including me. The NRA is the 800# gorilla making your lawmakers pay attention to the fact that there are a lot of people that cherish the second amendment and if they step over the line they won't have the title of senator or congressman before their name anymore.

Don't even mention the other gun rights groups that NO ONE pays any attention to. They do nothing for us at all.

I agree that such an abrasive style of communication is a real turn off.

But the troubles US gun owners face if the wrong judicial activist gets appointed to the next Supreme Court opening and/or voted to remain in the White House requires the best lobbying that we can find. If an organization is abrasive but effective, I can accept that.
Our US alternative could one day be the laws of Canada, Australia or even the UK. The UK's laws are a dream of the antis. But many would want to go further.

The NRA is the only strong group available to us. The common impression that the antis want to target only the AK clones and ARs is very misleading.

You are probably aware that the White House and ATF fairly recently blocked imports of M-1 Carbines from South Korea, because of the magazine capacity.
This is just the beginning, and many of them don't care how small the magazine is. Foreign and domestic ammo could be blocked or simply taxed so much that most of us could not afford it.

+1. The 4 million of us will continue to shoulder the burden, and the left-leaning media can keep painting NRA members as a fringe lunatic minority.

I get annoyed at their politics, but they're a lot like a very very tough guy who has my back in a bad neighborhood. He might have body odor and bad taste, but he's all I've got on my side.

I do also support SAF.

The NRA specializes in guns, gun control, gun safety, and gun laws.

They do not claim to be marketing whizzes or great telemarketers. The NRA subcontracts out this kind of thing. Sometimes their subcontractors do really really dumb stuff.

You call the NRA about a billing issue you'll probably get directed to a generic call center to a guy just doing his or her job who may or may not be an NRA member.

NRA subcontracts out the printing of American Rifleman and all their other magazines. If your issue comes and all the color is wrong in the pictures, it is the fault of their sub-contractors not the NRA itself.

Judge the organization on what it does in the areas where it actually works, not the peripheral stuff.

We'll pay your share...just like we always have. We have made it this long without your membership, so we will continue to plug along and protect your rights as we have in the past.

All I can say is once you join don't give them your email address.

I heard it as the 600# gorilla. They're just trying to get to 800#, so they're mining every ore vein they can. Somebody once said that the true measure of a man can be gauged by the size of the things that annoy him.

An annual membership is only $35.00

You spend more than that on a month's worth of soft drinks (or coffee).

Then go join the other gun rights group on capital hill..........Oh wait..:uhoh:....and dont whine when you lose more of your 2nd A rights. Like said in previous posts, "we'll continue to pay for your gunrights too, an continue to watch you hide the wagon".:cuss: v v v v v

I found some american rifleman magazines from the early 70's not long ago.....the same fear tactics were in them.

Unfortunately they make use of marketing firms that employ dubious solicitation tactics. If getting junk mail pisses you off enough to condemn the organization, then you should not be a member.

You don't get this stuff if you are a Life Member. At least, I don't.

"This might come out as a rant"

That was no rant, but it was much ado about next to nothing. It was one piece of junk mail amongst many. I have to ask, do you always get upset over little things?

The NRA carries on without you.

I joined the NRA a couple years ago and I regretted it. I gave them my email address and they were irresponsible with it and continually spammed my mailbox. I thought if I simply "unsubscribed" it would cease, but found out that they compartmentalize dozens of subgroups and they all zealously spammed my mailbox continually.

After "unsubscribing" to at least a dozen or more of these subgroups, and the spam continuing, I had to actually call and ask them to remove all my information from their system.

Additionally, I'm not sure what or where the money I paid for my membership goes to aside from excessive mailings. If they're actually holding back the liberal hordes from destroying our gun rights, it's hard to tell from this end of the country (Massachusetts).

It's not just getting junk mail. It's the tactic that was used in the junk mail.

The NRA has been sending letters like that at least since I was in 8th grade, 1988. I remember that because my Dad was my 8th grade teacher. A friend brought his doomsday letter to school. Dad used it as an impromptu lesson on rights guaranteed in the Constitution.
