Finally picked one!

so after much discussion, debate, and trial..

i finally made a purchase to protect myself, and most importantly my family.

i settled on the Smith and Wesson Sigma 40 caliber

i couldnt be more happy, especially that my local sporting goods store had them for 279.00

i appreciate everyone who helped in the selection process!

im very happy with my new product :)
 
yes, it was a great deal.

i do plan on doing some work with it like lighter trigger, and spring. but that will come later. for now, i want to put some rounds in.

i feel much better that its here in the house to protect my family.
 
Good choice. I have been carrying one for years. If you work with the trigger for a while you will get used to it.
 
Good deal on an underrated pistol! These are, INHO, much better than the early Sigmas.

One additional good thing: when many calibers were off the shelves, I saw lots of .40 S&W in stock at lease in S. Texas.

Now go out and enjoy that Smith!

i shot it for the first time the other day. i have to say, the trigger really didnt bother me at all! yes its a little different to get used to, but i like it, i was able to get a nice little grouping.

i got a great deal, it fits my hand perfect. i love it to death already!

now to look for a good range to go to around Killeen. from what i hear, theres not many locally, but a 30 min drive can solve that problem.


any specfic ammo i should go with for home defense? target?
 
Ammo is over rated, go with what you have. Excellant choice of gun, should last you a long long time.
 
Congratulations on your purchase. I can't really comment on the Sigma as I don't have any experience with it. As for ammunition I usually practice with whatever full metal jacket Wal Mart has (Winchester White Box, Remington UMC, Federal Champion) in stock that is cheapest. For defense just about any quality jacketed hollow point should do. You may want to run some of whatever defensive ammunition you decide on through the pistol to make sure it will function properly with it before you depend on the pistol for defense.
 
Good thing about handgun calibers that begin with a 4: any bullet is going to be heavy enough to penetrate, and the diameter is already pretty big. I'd try something like a truncated cone for starters. It could make a good practice load, and I definitely wouldn't want to get hit with one.

Any quality hollow-point should be a good choice. I've had good accuracy and reliability with Winchester PDX1, at least in 9mm+P.

Any JHP (jacketed hollow point) from Federal, Hornady, Remington, Speer, or Winchester should be fine. Just run a box thru the pistol to make sure it likes that particular flavor (Sigmas typically aren't picky). If for some odd reason it doesn't like a particular JHP just try another.

Any FMJ load (no need to spend extra on JHP just for target practice) from any reputable manufacturer will be fine. You can shoot plain lead in a Sigma, but I rarely see plain bullets factory loaded in .40 S&W ammo.

Congrats on the new pistol. It sounds like you have the mindset to use it if need be, and sounds like you're rapidly acquiring skill set too. Stay safe, and I hope fun at the range is all you ever need the pistol for.

so far this is one of my fav places to come for info, not once has anyone made me feel like an idiot or talked to me like i didnt really want to know the info!


picked up some winchester .40 at my local store. i went with hornaday hollow point for home defense.

i wish we had more of a following down here in texas (specifically killeen) as far as gun clubs.

with all the recent hoopla like the guy going crazy and years ago and the other guy trying to buy large amounts of black powder..seems everyone is pretty on edge.

if i havent said it already, i appreciate every one of you who have made input on my questions!
 
shoot 'em up!..then you'll know what you want in your next one..and the next one....and the one after that ;)

Your choice of Hornaday HP's for home defense is a good one, especially if you chose something from their "Critical Defense" line. The premium hollow-points from the major makers are very, very good these days, and .40 S&W is a great caliber for what you're asking of it.

Enjoy your new pistol! Get some good training, if you can. An experienced trainer can spot mistakes you're making that you might never figure out for yourself. It's money well spent.

Lots of good options available and you certainly chose one! Great gun absent breaking the bank. I have the same gun in 9mm and have had great luck with it (just because I have lots of 9mm ammo already on hand and it's a bit cheaper).

yes, i did choose their critical defense line as an a first defense.

its funny how these pistols that go for 279.00 never jam and always work better than the high dollar weapons. smith and wesson was my first choice :)

ive already signed up for a CHL class which will cost me about 100 dollars and thats everything i need. :)

i wish SW had a club for us owners :-\

i do plan on joining the NRA

Good choice for price and caliber. My friend has one in 9mm and its never given problems, quick trigger job with springs and that was it. Ergonomics are better than any glock I've handled and its a Smith Wesson.
 
I have a Sigma .40 as well and I like it just fine. It's a good pistol for the money.
Mine isn't really picky about ammo. The only thing I've ever shot that it didn't like was Monarch ammunition. It'll jam an average of 3 times per magazine. However I've tried Federal, Winchester, and Remington factory ammo, as well as several different handloadings and have never had a problem with any of them.

As far as home defense, I use Remington Golden Sabers, but the Hornadys you chose are great as well.

I have a nine. It's carefree about ammo. It's pretty accurate.
I really like the grip. It fills my hand perfectly.

Good buy at about the right price.

I would have NEVER in a million years picked this gun up for myself. Hated the gritty trigger (not the weight, the sand they inject before shipping) Felt it when I was buying my M&P.

However It wasn't my choice, I laid an array of $600 guns before her, the wife picked the Sigma 9 on grip comfort for her birthday.

True love is arming your spouse and turning your back on her. ;)

It shoots well, easy to clean, trigger is nice and safe at that weight... and the sandy grit is smoothing out with use. I have no qualms about carrying it in place of my M&P .40 when it's necessary.

When the missus upgrades to a nicer gun, I'll keep the sigma around for times when the environment would harm a gun I'd prefer to coddle.
