I went down to Double-Action near my parent's house. Great place, nice selection and the guy behind the counter was nice enough to just chat about the guns I was looking for and filled me and my friend (never shot a gun before) about certain things about the guns.
We both rented a gun to shoot. He, being a big WW2 buff wanted to shoot a 1911, and I wanted to shoot a Ruger Vaquero at first until they said they didn't have any .45 lc ammo. So I decided to make the range trip practical and try out one of the guns I have on my list of CCW options. I picked a Ruger Sp101.
My friend, that never shot ANYTHING before nailed his first shot in the middle of the head of the silhouette target at about 20 or so yards. His groupings were a little high but were pretty good for a beginner. I showed him the correct way to hold it so his hand won't get bitten by the slide and how to stand and line up the sights. He loved it and is now completely hooked and wants to shoot rifles and shotguns now. I however didnt' quite enjoy the Sp101. It came with the usual factory grips that seemed too small for my hand and not very comfortable, and the recoil wasn't too pleasant. The follow up shots were slow and the accuracy wasn't that great. (maybe it's just me) I think I might pass on the Sp101 although my friend shot some type of 1911 Kimber and I really enjoyed it more. It felt very comfortable in my hand and the follow up shots had potential to be much quicker since the slide absorbs most of the recoil.
I won't dismiss all revolvers based on the experience with the SP101 but I'll still keep the 1911 in mind, especially after the experience with it. I still want to try out the Ruger Gp100, the S&W model 686, more 1911 types because my hands seem to be a little big for small framed revolvers. We'll see. I plan more trips in the future. So far at the front of the race is the 1911.
