:banghead:I have a S&W 638 but Iam not very happy with it. I have on order a new Sig P238 for CC. My question is I have a friend that is willing to trade me his Ruger SP101 for my 638. I like the SP101 better and shoot it better. So my question is do you guys feel these guns are of equal value? I bought my 638 for $420.00 a couple of years ago but the prices have gone up since then. A new SP101 is in the $500 range so what do ya think?

Prices for a new 638 here is about $500 across the board (pre-haggle price). Same for a sp101. Good trade if you ask me. One gun you like to shoot is worth two you don't like.

I live in Central Fl also, and have been looking at the 638 and the sp101 just this week.

what I think

From your statement; that you shoot the SP better, I would conclude that you have given shootability a greater value, than say lighter weight for carrying that the 638 may have.

You do not state that you intend to sell sometime and therefor, the value lies in the abstract of shooting the SP more accurately, and not in monetary
assignment that they may hold.

Market value is not a good comparison of utility for most things.

...yes, you may...and if you don't...you may not get another chance the SP is scarce...and like having a concealable tank...I'm looking for one to go with my GP...

Sounds like a good trade to me.... Then again, I firmly believe that the sp101 is the best 5 shot 357/38 on the market, so my opinion may be slanted. :)

make the trade

a-you don't like the 638
b-probably has the Hillary Hole
c-the Ruger is a fine weapon

this seems like a no brainer
get rid of the gun you dislike for another that is high quality

Thanks for all your imput. I made the trade today and I am very happy.

Good choice. I bought my Ruger SP101 before I bought my S&W 638, and I'm happy with both, but I feel it's just a good trade becaues I only paid a little more for the SP101.

I hope your friend is happy too.
