Since January I've undergone surgery to have a kidney removed, chemo, blood thinners and doctor consults. Still on the chemo, but the blood thinners have goneby the way side and was finally able to shoot my 300 Weatherby mag not to long ago and it was still very much on target at 100 yards.

I ventured into central Arkansas last weekend to scout for deer in new hunting territory and that trip went better than expected. Next week the real deal, headed back to Mt. Ida and a week and a half of deer hunting. I'm like a small boy at Christmas time excited as all hell. Will be hunting with some old friends and my brother as they all know this could be my last hunt. It will be very emotional for all of us, but we will still have a good time and do plan on eating venison more than one night while there.

Pictures will follow after our return in a few weeks.

Wow. Most people only get new clothes, a rifle or something to prepare for a new season.

Congrats on everything coming out good for ya so far. (don't forget to take another with your handgun this year.)

You're in our prayers here at the wrs840 hacienda. Have fun!!

Just to cheer you a bit. When I was 63 I lost a kidney to cancer while they were treating me for leukemia as well. The doctors said I had little chance of surviving the leukemia because of my age. That was 7 years ago and I'm still here. It's beatable these days my friend, and you will also be a survivor.

And I expect you to get one great buck while you are out there in the boonies!!!!! They tell me those hills are crawling with them.

Thank you for all the kind words of incouragement and thank you for the prayers. I hope this is not the last hunt, but if it is, it will be most enjoyable. Yes kanook, I will be carring a pistol on some days. I've toyed with the idea of my 38 Super, but will probably take my 44 mag.

Thanks again!!!

Not to be mushy but, your hunting photos and captions that went with them has been very inspiring to myself and a lot of my friends. You are proof that a person that is skilled and determined can do almost anything. God Speed friend.

Hunting Set Up

This will be my hunting set up for this year.

The 629 is my normal "deer rifle." I don't even know how many deer I have shot with that pistol. I'll use it in wooded areas that may give me a 100 yard shot. I've taken game at 130 yards with it and am WELL versed on where it shoots. 275 grain bullet, 1200 fps, H110 load.

The VanGuard rifle I've never shot any game with. As a matter of fact it is a fluke that I even own it. I will use it this weekend in the open pastures that deer frequent in that part of the country. Some of the shots there reach ranges of 300 yards. It's a 300 Weatherby mag. Hey, it was free so I'm not complaining. 180 grain factory Federal Vital Shok. 3190 fps, zeroed dead center at 300 yards.

Kimber Custom TLE II I'll use when ranges are 40 yards and under. Plus it is one of my carry guns. I've taken three deer with it. 230 grain Speer Gold dot bullet. I've never chronoed it but it did a hell of a number on three deer at 25 yards, 30 feet, and 20 feet.

I need this hunt as I didn't get the chance to go last year.

Man, I wish you all the success you can handle on your hunt, and I hope you build wonderful memories with your friends and family. Have fun, and be safe.
