Finding gun while running

The other night I woke up from a dream in which i was out for a daily jog and came upon a Glock 19 in the field. If this was to happen in real life I would turn it over to the sheriff to see if it was stolen. If not stolen what would be the chances that one could claim the gun after say 1 month or so. This is rural ND, not Chicago where the gun would be destroyed.
 
That must be the one i threw away in my dream because i squezed the trigger numerous times and couldn't get it to fire while being chased by a pack of big coyotes.
 
once when i was in school i found $125 and i turned it in and they gave it back to me after a month er so cause nobody claimed it. and i say finders keepers if nobody claims it after some time. my best friends g/f found a remington 870 in the middle of the highway goin to work one morning. she just gave it to him. i have to say that if i fouond a gun id make an honest effort to find the owner. but if i couldnt i wouldnt turn it into the law. they will just keep it or someone in the dept will get it and what claims to it do they have? and if i knew a dept would likely destroy it there no chance id give it up to them. just calmly, quietly pick up the gun and have an excellent day! :D
 
If your local Police are cool, they'd prolly let you take the gun after ensuring it was not stolen and had no claim.

A lot of juristictions would just take it and not allow you to get it.

Redranger1, you might find yourself in serious legal trouble if you kept a gun you'd "found", and later investigation revealed that it had been used in a crime, or stolen, or something like that. Remember that if you ever use that gun to defend yourself, it will be confiscated from you as evidence and ballistically tested, so that it can be checked against other crime info. The serial number will also be checked against the NICS list of stolen or lost weapons. If any of that comes back positive, you're going to have a heck of a lot of explaining to do... and "I found it!" won't cut it as an explanation for being in possession.

Solution: report and hand in any "found" weapon to the police, and get a receipt for it. That way, you're legally in the clear, and if the gun is unclaimed for a while, you have at least some chance of getting it back, on the basis of "finders keepers".
 
Preacherman is right on the money with this one. A found gun may have a history you want nothing to do with.
 
I found a shotgun in the road at an intersection a while back, as I was going to church. It was a beat up mess. I let one of the other church members take it to the police station, since I didn't know my way around town. I was not interested in keeping that gun, due to it's damage. It would have required a good checkout by a gunsmith before I would risk firing it, and that might have exceeded the value of the gun.
 
I found a diamond ring once - when I was in 10th grade and working in a grocery store - while I was sweeping the floor near the checkout. Saw it sparkle in the dust pan just before I dumped it into the garbage.

Turned it in to the front desk, someone came by the next day, and I made the womans life by having turned it in. SHe was very thankful and gave me a $100 reward.
 
Yeah around here our Sheriff's dept has 4 or 5 guys on it.

In my dream the gun looked to be in perfect working order with a full mag but the finish had worn off on the slide.

Unfortunately my dream didn't include Cindy Crawford.:)
 
I'd have turned the gun in. I have no wish to be associated with a gun that may have been used in some killing spree. No thanks. I have quite enough financial problems as it is without have to pay an attorney. I can't even afford a $200.00 Ruger 10/22 :( :banghead: . That's the problem with making good quality leather products. You make a good belt or wallet for a guy who's 40 years old, unless it's stolen, lost or destroyed in a fire, chances are that the belt will outlast him.
 
A freind of mine found a thompson center newenglander shotgun that had the factory camouflage finish. It was loaded with #4 shot and had full choke in the barrel . He figures that a turkey hunter leaned it up agaisnt a tree and couldnt find it because it was camouflaged! The charge in the barrel was soaked with water and there was a slight amount of rust inside the bore. But after pulling the charge and polishing the bored with JB bore cleaner and steel wool its as good as new. He tried to find its owner by posting adds in the local paper but no one would own up to loosing it.

another freind found a Rugger black hawk near a pond and it was very rusty. It was still in its holster with a broken belt loop.

I'd call the Sheriff. Give him the make and serial number and tell him if he has any info or anyone comes looking for it, come and get it.
