Finest fighting force.

I thought the most elite fighting force was the mall strike team, what with the duct taped on ballistic plates for multiple 308 hits. i don't think the navy seals have that level of technology yet.

Mall Ninja are the worlds finest fighting force. Bush is just holding them back because once their unleased .It will be near impossible to stop them from takeing control of the world.

Army Active duty guys serving in infantry tend to be as intense and high speed as any marine i've known. But this post will just end up a long service branch pissing contest.

Then how come I keep seeing so many HK MP5's? If the Brits are using US weapons then why are we using German?

Ahem, the CSG9, Germany's anti-terrorism unit, and one of the best in the world carries....

Smith & Wesson and Ruger .357 Magnum Revolvers....

Along with all those HKs....

Pick the best tool for the job out of your toolbox. Just keep adding tools to it...:D

Not a 13 year old kid, rather a fifty year old who has served in the British Forces. With years of experience also working with US forces, and other European foces. All good guys but some a little gung ho,and campaign weary...

SAS use all sorts of kit the super duper Canadian version of the M16 is one of there more commonly used weapons.
the special forces version is about twice the price and a much better quality weapon than the standard c9.
mate of mine in the TA is a movie armourer turned up with loads of interesting kit for one annual camp.
guys playing the enemy all got version of the m16 to play with convinced a whole lot of recruits we were special forces :D

SAS were named special air service to confuse the germans

The Special Air Service currently uses the Canadian Diemaco C8 SFW as their primary weapon. They also use the Belgian designed and British built FN MAG, the Belgian FN Minimi, the Swiss SIG P226, the British Arctic Warfare rifles, the German AG36 grenade launcher and so on. The German H&K HK53 may well still be in use for personal protection routines. In fact, I can't think of a single American hand-held small-arm used by Them. Of course, this is all based on what we're told by the MOD, ex-SAS members and what we see in the rare glimpses of Them caught on film. They could be using American 180s and we might not know about it.

The SAS were named the SAS because that's what they did - special airborne operations.

As a rule, anybody who thinks they know anything about Them beyond what they see on TV, read on books and on the internet is talking rubbish. Ever pub in Britain has a bloke who used to be in the SAS or whose brother was in the SAS but got mortally wounded by an Iraqi in Desert Storm and told him everything he knew on his death bed, or who is technically still in the SAS because he jumped out of a moving helicopter to escape the genetic experimentation the MOD was conducting on Them, or who sat and shat the **** with them in the Falklands for a couple of hours and thought they were "alright fellas but a bit detached if you know what I mean" and they let him hold their magic ray guns while they took a wee and they asked if he wanted to join but he said he preferred the quiet life.

The SAS use whatever is appropriate for the job in hand.

Basic rule of thumb,

Do unto others as they would do unto you, except first, fast and dirtier

You guys are all wrong...the finest fighting force in the world are the guys over on Arfcom. As such that is why they carry M16....I mean highly modified AR15s....

It's 380 Lapua rounds they're going up against. I won't stand for you to denegrate such an unstoppable force. You should be ashamed.

I thought they got that name to confuse people and were primarily a high-mobility ground force? Edit: oops, I see that was mentioned already.

Hey, I actually do have a guy in my local pub who's ex ASAS. I keep asking him about weapons and knives and all I ever get is foul language and tirades against walts. Can't understand him though.

If this is a thread for boasting about A) the SAS and b) the AR and its general Evil Black goodness, I'm all for it. Both rock.

i will repeat myself, the Norwegian FSK is the best special forces in the world!

they dont use no silly M16 either!....Diemaco C8 (or some sort...) but seeing as we changed our standard assault rifle to HK416 i reckon they will be using that....

Norway rules....

I helped the SAS archive one of there mission goals in basra :D showed them where you got pizza:D
also saved a teams life sort of told them to stop going out of camp lead jedi starts arguing giving it the big I am then shuts up as a warrior comes round the corner:D
you may be high speed but in a competition a suv vs 40 tons of afv trying to share the same space your going to lose :D

I think they are all tools for different jobs so it's hard to say anyone is the best. Bunch of different scalpels. For example Delta (CAG) is a killer counter terrorism branch, rangers for clearing/securing areas, SF for training guerilla forces, SEALS for sneaking intel or surgical strikes, etc. (I don't know if those are all right, just what I gather). I think Delta was based on the SAS after Beckwith spent a few years with them.
Do the Navy Seals have a choice of world wide weapons or is it a limited choice.
I've heard the Navy Surface Warfare Center procures and develops small arms for all US SOCOM branches and that they get to use just about whatever is the best tool for the job. Not sure how the SAS pics weapons other than what I saw in Bravo Two Zero :p I was impressed with the load those guys carry. Hard to be a lightfigher with 180lbs on your back

Nope. They were designed as an accompanying unit to the LRDG (Long Range Desert Patrol). The LRDG were a highly mobile elite ground force as you describe, using vehicles to patrol deep behind enemy lines in North Africa. The LRDG were excellent for ambushes and intelligence gathering, but lacked the offensive power to take out airbases which is what the British really needed doing. The SAS were developed to parachute behind enemy lines and attack airbases. Then, the LRDG would pick them up and extract them back to friendly lines.

Unfortunately, this setup didn't work very well and the strong winds of the North African desert killed many of the parachutists. After a stint of being transported by the LRDG the Willis Jeep arrived in North Africa. The SAS set about modifying a fleet of them and then adopted them as their own personal battle mounts, attacking airbases from their own vehicles rather than parachuting in or using those of the LRDG.

SAS was David Sterling's "L" Detachemnt Special Air Service Briagde, 66 men strong, named to fool the Germans that an airborne Briagde was in North Africa during the early years of WWII. They idea was to have a parachute commando unit able to stike targets through out the theater. They suffered heavy cauilties and had to be rescued by units of Maj. Bagnold's Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) formerly Long Range Patrol. Sterling after seeing the LRDG, put his commandos in vehicles like the LRDG and the rest is history.

Fosbery beat me to it.

Ah yes I believe that is the deception people are thinking of: a brigade is five and a half thousand men. The SAS was only a tiny fraction of than number yet it was still called a brigade.

LAPD fighting force

Leslie Nielsen said that the finest fighting force in the world was the LAPD. So there.
Dan Ackroyd said that in Dragnet.

Tidbit for you,
When the problem was going on in Iran (Jimmy Carter) In response to the Shah's entry into the U.S., Iranian militants seized the American embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran_hostage_crisis

The thought was going around to gather several of the SWAT units from the large cities and send them to the Embassy to protect, and LAPD was one of them as I remember.
It could have all been smoke, but it was mind boggling how bad our military was at that point in time. President Reagan to the rescue.

"Why do the members of the finest fighting force in the world (SPECIAL AIR SERVICE) prefer American firearms ?"

How do you know that and what is it they prefer?

The finest fighting force in the world was the Roman Legions and the Army of Northern Virginia in that order, IMHO

"Why do the members of the finest fighting force in the world (SPECIAL AIR SERVICE) prefer American firearms ?"

Could you give us some of the firearms they prefer, and the caliber, or is it calibre:uhoh:
