finished my "truck-gun" project

Found a beat up Norinco SKS at the gun show last month and finaly finished 'restoring' it. At first I refinished the stock with stain and tung oil, but it was too pretty for my beater project so I go a spare stock from a friend who had switched to a folder. I stripped and finished the new on in green Krylon...much more apropriate for its role! The I stripped the blueing/rust off and treated the metal to a fresh coat of Brownells Moly/Teflon oven cure finish. The 2 go together like Cosmoline and steel cased ammo. I toped it off with an orange front sight from Tapco. I'm very please with the outcome.

Now I just need to find a truck to put it in

Looks purty. I think that flat O.D. looks nice on it. Awesome for a truck gun. Does the paint have a real good feel to it? Not slippery or anything of of the sort?

i hope so, but it is more likely that he has documentation that precludes the executive order or just put it on to purdy the rifle up for the photo shoot.

Wow, that looks great! I love the look.

I have a Romanian that looks a little like that. I put a fiberglass Jungle Stock on it that I painted with OD Alumahyde II. I just need to get off my butt and Gunkote the metal like I've been meaning to do for about a year.

I put one coat of the Brownells stuff on...because I ran out after one coat. The ad said there was enough for 2 long guns. Maybe 2 single barrel 18in shotguns, or short barreled bolt actions...but only one military rifle with lots of parts and pieces. Beware it dosn't come in a standard size spray can as I was expecting...and for $30 a full size can would be nice. And it smells like holy hell. I treated the gun outside and I still got kinda woozy...wearing a mask would be a good idea. Be extra sure to strip any finish with a chemical blue remover or get beadblasting then chemicaly degrease it (break cleaner works and is cheap), and pre-heat the metal to about 100 degrees. Oh yea, and don't bake it when the wife will be home for a few hours.

It had the bayonet attached when I bought it...a friend bought one the same day, same configuration. I thought the bayonet was kosher since it dosn't have a pistol grip, flash hider or detachable magazine or hold more than 10 rounds (and imported pre-ban). Is there like a special exception for Norinco SKS's?

yup, but off the top of my head i am not exactly sure what it is. i recall it was passed around 1990 but that is just a guess. if you really want to know you should head over to www.sksboards.com those guys spend way too much time on the little guy and know much more than i thought was possible.

Something to the effect that unless documentation is provided proving a given Norinco SKS was imported prior to the enactment of an onerous piece of legislation called 922(r) in 1990, the bayonets are not legal to be attached - regardless of pistol grip stocks, folding buttstocks, detachable magazines, etc.

Now, Russian and Yugoslavian SKS rifles may keep their bayonets, since they were imported as Curio & Relic firearms, much like the Mosin-Nagant carbines and Czech VZ-52 rifles, with permanently-affixed bayonets.

The ATF made a blanket ruling a couple years ago concerning the Chinese SKS rifles, which essentially forced people to remove the bayonets from their rifles. Distributors of the rifles went one step further, grinding off the bayonet attachment points or making them unusable for their original purpose.

I know, I know, it's like there are so darned many drive-by bayonettings happening in America.

That SKS looks really good! I like the green. I was thinking about painting my stock black but now I have seen the green, I think it would look better. I can't decide if I should paint my Yugo or my Norinco. I think a Yugo would look very cool with the green because it is already a military looking gun.

As to the bayo on the Norinco, I have tried to find a clean cut answer myself. From what I have gleaned, if you can prove that the SKS was pre-ban, you can have a bayo. If there is any doubt or you have no info that would stand up in court, it just isn't worth the risk for a pointy piece of cheap metal. I have a Norinco without a bayo and I don't intend to put one on because all it does is add weight and risk a felony. I don't think anyone has ever been convicted of a crime involving a bayonet on a non-pre-ban Chinese SKS but I don't want to be the first.
