There are a lot of Finnish Mosin M39's out there and I want to buy one. It seems to easy to pick up one that has a receiver built before 1899, as well as options built in the 1940's. I'm intrigued about getting an "antique" one that doesn't require an FFL, but I do plan on shooting it.

Is there a significant difference in metallurgy quality between the 1890's and 1940's variations? Other than the "neato" factor of owning the antique, is one more desirable or better from a practicality standpoint?

I think (I maybe wrong) but the Finish M39 is one of the harder Mosin Negant models to fined. Also one of the higher priced ones if I recall correctly.

As for the metel? I can't help you there.

The Finns favored the hex type receiver that was phased out by the Russians around 1935 or so. You will find M39s with any year receiver. The only way you can tell for sure is pull the receiver out of the stock and look at the rear tang. The maker and date will be stamped there except for recievers made by New England Westinghouse. They did not stamp their receivers. Metalurgy is not a factor with Mosin Nagants. Collectors seem to favor the SAKO built M39s because they have a neat cartuche on the barrel shank......chris3

If its a hex receiver they are hard to beat. One of the strongest out there and the Russians made them in 1891 before the large ring and stronger Mauser 98 came up.
