Firearm safety inspections - Yes or No?

These "What did I just buy?" threads really mystify me.

Jim Watson, I'm with you. It blows my mind when people buy something and say, "I just bought this. Is it any good?" Why on earth wouldn't they ask that question BEFORE they bought it? Most people check reviews and know what they're getting into.

When it comes to used firearms, as long as they clearly haven't been monkeyed with, they're generally safer than an unknown factory firearm. They've gone the distance and held up just fine, so you can expect them to serve you as well as their previous owner.

For a mosin, since it's a rim case, you can make a field gauge with a washer cut down to about .074; cut a notch so the extractor fits.

I put on eye protection, welding gloves, put the rifle in a rest , and pulled the trigger with a metal rod standing way back and away from where the bolt would go. And it goes without saying that you check the bore for obstructions . Then examine the fired case for any oddities.

I am not a professional or anything by any means but it seems to me that any firearm that has been used a lot should be pretty evident and those are ones I would typically stay away from. I would say you should be able to get whatever the gun is, tear it down as far as the factory claims you need to, inspect the parts, clean the parts, put it back together and function check it. If you can rack it, feed a dummy round through it, drop a magazine, put the safety on take the safety off, dry fire it with no problems then for the most part you should be good to go. I do worry about headspacing issues as that seems to be a problem that would not end well if there was a problem. I have no experience with taking things down past their normal take down procedures but I am pretty mechanically inclined and have no problem field stripping one and putting it back together. If I feel like it needs to go farther than that then I will take it somewhere.
