My wife and I attended FAS's Free Handgun Seminar (FHS). I had attended FAS2 a few months prior and was impressed with the training. When my wife, who has shot a pistol only once before indicated some interest in shooting, I signed her up for the FHS.

We had an outstanding day. The first couple hours were spent in the classroom going over the basic safety and range rules. Since FAS focuses on defensive shooting, we spent a good deal of time covering the Oregon and Washington laws surrounding use of deadly force and concealed carry.

After lunch we spent about 2 hours on the range. The instructor-to-student ratio was about 1:2. They had a wide range of skill levels to deal with (From a 65 year old first-time-shooting woman to a 60+ year old man who had long gun hunted all his life) and I think they did a great job in selection of skills to teach and in assisting everyone. I can't go without saying that my wife was the *star* student in the class...she outshot everyone but the instructors and had a great time.

A few of the female instructors invited my wife to the Womens Study Group...a group of women who meet monthly for instruction and fun shooting. I hope she joins them.

On the way home she mentioned something about how it might not be a bad idea to look for a gun that fits her hand better than my Glock. That was music to my ears.

I would recommend the FHS to anyone new to handguns or even old timers who think they could use some professional guidance in improving their skills. I think FAS performs a great service to the shooting community by offering this free course.

Cool

So, did you run into Pax while you were there?

My wife is pregnant now, but we hav talked over going down to one of their classes this winter once she has the baby. My wife enjoys shooting, but every time I try to offer up advise, she tunes me out. Maybe if we go to a class, she will actually learn something.

What I think is cool is you HAVE to go to the free seminar before you can take any of their other classes.

Pax and FAS

Greetings Greg...

Yes! I did have the pleasure of meeting Pax while there....that was icing on the cake.

And as you mentioned....one nice thing about the free seminar is you get a free taste of the facility, instructors and approach.

And...like skiing...I think teaching shooting is sometimes best done by innocent 3rd parties...*chuckle*

best of luck...

I too have some trouble instructing my wife, I think it's a common problem.....I have heard nothing but positive reports on FAS and plan to get her in there soon..... just the fact there are other women around helps ease them into it.....thanks for the report on your wifes good experience at FAS.......tom

I understand Gila Hayes, Marty's wife, is an excellent teacher and the women only program there is very strong. I've talked to her on two occasions and she's really helpful.

Gila Hayes

Prior to attending the FHS my only interaction with Gila had been via phone and email, where she had been quite helpful and pleasant.

I really liked her as an instructor. She has the skills, and as importantly in a beginning course like this, she is quite good at teaching and making folks feel safe and comfortable.

my girlfiriend and i have taken them up on their FHS too. excellent class, excellent people. when i can take a whole weekend, i plan on going back for FAS-2 & 3. highly recommended for anyone in the area.
