My wife and I attended FAS's Free Handgun Seminar (FHS). I had attended FAS2 a few months prior and was impressed with the training. When my wife, who has shot a pistol only once before indicated some interest in shooting, I signed her up for the FHS.
We had an outstanding day. The first couple hours were spent in the classroom going over the basic safety and range rules. Since FAS focuses on defensive shooting, we spent a good deal of time covering the Oregon and Washington laws surrounding use of deadly force and concealed carry.
After lunch we spent about 2 hours on the range. The instructor-to-student ratio was about 1:2. They had a wide range of skill levels to deal with (From a 65 year old first-time-shooting woman to a 60+ year old man who had long gun hunted all his life) and I think they did a great job in selection of skills to teach and in assisting everyone. I can't go without saying that my wife was the *star* student in the class...she outshot everyone but the instructors and had a great time.
A few of the female instructors invited my wife to the Womens Study Group...a group of women who meet monthly for instruction and fun shooting. I hope she joins them.
On the way home she mentioned something about how it might not be a bad idea to look for a gun that fits her hand better than my Glock. That was music to my ears.
I would recommend the FHS to anyone new to handguns or even old timers who think they could use some professional guidance in improving their skills. I think FAS performs a great service to the shooting community by offering this free course.
