Hi folks,

I have a Texas CHL and am thinking about driving to Ski Apache with the family in New Mexico sometime in Jan. Ski Apache is within the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation, and I appreciate that Indian Reservations differ from State law in numerous areas.

Does anyone know if it is OK to have a handgun stored in the car within the reservation ? I don't care about the configuration (with / without ammo, assembled / disassembled) - I presume I can't CC.

If not - any ideas where I could leave the firearm outside of the reservation for a week or so ?

Cheers,

SDS

Red man generally no like white man with guns. Call and ask, but I'd prefer to get something in writing if Chief Whitefeather decides to change his mind. They do that all the time back home on the rez's in Arizona. Many tribal nation laws aren't even written down anywhere...just passed by word of mouth. Look and see if there's anything on-line.

As for leaving a firearm off the rez. Try a local gun store. I'll bet they'd hold it for you for a small fee.

Generally speaking, NM is NOT gun-friendly, and you best be careful. Beyond that I can't help you, but look forward to the answer along with you, as I ski'ed Santa Fe last year, and am heading through up to Wolf Creek this year.

There is hunting on the reservation (apparently they're famous for their elk hunts).

Its hard to find info on the tribal government online (all the "official web site" links seem to go to the casino and resort on the reservation)

Here's a list of the tribal officials with some contact numbers ... no clear "law enforcement" there but maybe someone you can call.

New Mexico state law doesn't allow concealed carry on tribal lands "unless authorized by the governing body of the tribe or pueblo" so its possible you could get some sort of permission to carry (although I doubt it).
